United to Add 30 New Embraer 76-Seat Aircraft to United Express Fleet

United purchasing aircraft that a United Express partner will operate

CHICAGO, April 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced an agreement to add 30 Embraer 175 regional jets to the United Express fleet. Under an agreement with Embraer, United will purchase the aircraft with deliveries in 2014 and 2015. These aircraft will be operated by a United Express partner to be announced later.

"At United, we are focused on modernizing our fleet, and we look forward to introducing the E175 to our United Express service. Compared to the 50-seat aircraft we are replacing, these aircraft provide a superior customer experience and are more fuel efficient," said Jim Compton, United's vice chairman and chief revenue officer. "With a large first class cabin, wider fuselage, and larger overhead bins, this aircraft brings an improved regional flying experience to our customers."

Embraer booked another US order. Now it's SkyWest Airlines with a firm order for 40 E175s. 60 reconfirmable orders and 100 options.

Quote:
Embraer and SkyWest Inc. Sign a Contract for 40 firm E-Jets

São José dos Campos, Brazil, May 21, 2013 – Embraer and SkyWest Inc. (SkyWest) announced a firm order, today, for 40 EMBRAER 175 aircraft. SkyWest will operate the aircraft under a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA) with United Airlines. Another 60 firm orders are reconfirmable aircraft, which are subject to SkyWest being awarded CPA agreement contracts with major U.S. airline partners. In addition to that, the agreement includes options for another 100 E175s, taking the total order potential up to 200 airplanes.

The firm orders for the first 40 aircraft will be included in Embraer’s 2013 second quarter backlog. This sale is in addition to the contract signed by Embraer with United Airlines for 30 firm and 40 options for E175 jets.

If all 100 firm orders are exercised, the order has an estimated value of USD 4.1 billion at current list prices, representing one of the most significant orders in each company’s histories. SkyWest plans to configure the E175s in a dual-class 76-seat layout, with the delivery of the first aircraft scheduled for the second quarter of 2014.

Let's do a comparison test... which of these two American Eagle liveries you like better, on an Embraer ERJ aircraft:

The old version -- ERJ-135LR (reg. N724AE)

Source

The new version -- ERJ-145LR (reg. N928AE)

Source

In addition, one of its aircraft also has a special livery...

American Eagle ERJ-145LR, "Breast Cancer Awareness" (reg. N690AE)

Source

And, this is a new operator of the ERJ series... with another suffix that I haven't seen before.

Mocambique Expresso ERJ-145MP (reg. C9-MEX)

Embraer has launched the E-Jet E2 family today at the Paris airshow.

Quote:
Embraer Launches “E2”, the Second Generation of E-Jets

Paris, France, June 17, 2013 – Embraer S.A. (NYSE: ERJ; BM&F BOVESPA: EMBR3) announces, today, the launch of the second generation of its E-Jets family of commercial aircraft, named the E-Jets E2 and comprising three new airplanes – E175-E2, E190-E2, and E195-E2. The E190-E2 is expected to enter service in the first half of 2018. The E195-E2 is slated to enter service in 2019 and the E175-E2 in 2020.

“After more than a decade of success, the E-Jets have become a fixture in commercial airline fleets around the world,” said Frederico Fleury Curado, Embraer S.A. President and CEO. “The launch of the E2 builds on our vision to offer leading-edge commercial jets with a capacity right-sized for 70 to 130 seats, seamless mainline comfort, and performance for flexible and efficient utilization by regional, low-cost, and network carriers.”

In a typical single-class layout, the E175-E2 was extended by one seat row, compared to the current generation E175, and will seat up to 88 passengers, while the E190-E2 keeps the same size as the E190, of up to 106 seats. The E195-E2, compared to the current E195, has grown three seat rows and will accommodate up to 132 seats.

“Our strategy is to offer all the benefits of a clean-sheet design, but with the reliability of a mature platform and commonality with current generation E-Jets,” said Paulo Cesar Silva, President & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation, “We have been continually investing in the E-Jets program, so that our customers can stay competitive with aircraft that have the lowest operating costs and the highest passenger appeal, today and in the future. I’m confident that with our mature global support network, the compelling operating economics, and the benchmark cabins of the airplanes, both existing and prospective customers will recognize the benefits of the E-Jets E2.”

The application of advanced technologies for engines, wings, and avionics distinguishes the E-Jets E2 by providing airlines with maximum efficiency gains and no compromises, while maintaining commonality with current E-Jets. New aerodynamically advanced, high-aspect ratio, distinctively shaped wings, improved systems and avionics, including 4th generation full fly-by-wire flight controls, and Pratt & Whitney’s PurePowerTM Geared Turbofan high by-pass ratio engines (PW1700G on the E175-E2, PW1900G on the E190-E2 and E195-E2) will result in double-digit reductions in fuel consumption, emissions, noise and maintenance costs, and increased aircraft availability. The E-Jets E2 will be capable of achieving similar costs per seat of larger re-engined narrowbody aircraft, with significantly lower costs per trip, thus creating new opportunities for lower risk development of new markets and fleet right-sizing by airlines.

Cockpit commonality with current generation E-Jets was a key driver in the design definition for a smooth transition for pilots who will fly the E2. Honeywell’s Primus Epic™ 2 advanced integrated avionics system with large landscape displays, advanced graphics capabilities, and Honeywell’s Next Generation Flight Management System (NGFMS), already in development with current-generation E-Jets, will provide exceptional pilot situational awareness and flexibility for continuous innovation on the flight deck.

Known for its comfortable and roomy cabins, with no middle seats, the E-Jets passenger experience will be further enhanced in the E2 generation. UK design firm Priestmangoode was contracted to jointly develop the aircraft cabin with Embraer. The interiors will establish a new benchmark in cabin design, improve the passenger experience, and deliver a more comfortable and improved environment, tailored to passengers’ needs, while maximizing airlines’ operational efficiency.

Other suppliers and partners for the E-Jets E2 have been announced previously: Liebherr (control systems for flaps and slats), Moog (fly-by-wire), Rockwell Collins (horizontal stabilizer control system), UTC Aerospace Systems (wheels, brakes, APU, electrical system), Intertechnique (engine and APU fuel feed, pressure refueling, fuel transfer, fuel tank inerting and ventilation, and fuel gauging and control), Crane Aerospace & Electronics (electronic control module for landing gear, brake control systems and proximity sensors), Triumph (fuselage segments, rudder and elevators) and Aernnova Aerospace (vertical and horizontal stabilizers).

Embraer estimates its total investments on the new E-Jets E2 models to be US$ 1.7 billion over the next eight years.

Embraer foresees a demand for 6,400 commercial jets with capacity of up to 130 seats, over the next 20 years. With more than 1,200 E-Jets orders, Embraer has achieved a 42% market share in its segment. Over 950 E-Jets have been delivered to date to 65 customers from 47 countries. Later this year, the 1,000th E-Jet will roll off the assembly line, nine years after the first aircraft entered revenue service.

LAM Embraer 190 crashed in Namibia

It is very sad that a Mozambique Airlines ERJ190 crashed on 29 November 2013 on the way from Maputo to Luanda in the Caprivi Strip in Namibia. The plane disappeared on 29 November 2013 and was discovered today 30 November 2013. All 33 people onboard died (27 passengers and 6 crew)

Quote:
Crash: LAM E190 over Botswana/Namibia on Nov 29th 2013, aircraft enroute lost altitude until impact with terrain

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Nov 29th 2013 22:43Z, last updated Saturday, Nov 30th 2013 16:17Z - Published on http://avherald.com/h?article=46c3abde

A LAM Linhas Aereas de Mocambique Embraer ERJ-190, registration C9-EMC performing flight TM-470 from Maputo (Mozambique) to Luanda (Angola) with 27 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute over northern Botswana when the aircraft suddenly began to descend at about 5000 feet per minute until radar contact and radio contact was lost with the aircraft at about 11:30Z. The aircraft did not arrive in Luanda (scheduled arrival at 14:10L, 13:10Z), the aircraft would have run out of fuel by now. There are no reports of an unscheduled landing anywhere in the region along the flight track. The aircraft was found crashed and burnt down on Namibia's territory in the Bwabwata National Park east of Rundu (Namibia) the following morning (Nov 30th), no survivors were found.

The following morning (Nov 30th) Namibia's Civil Aviation Authority reported that villagers in the Bwabwata National Park (Sambesi Region) reported the aircraft crashed in their neighbourhood with no survivors. A helicopter has been dispatched on site.

On Nov 30th late morning Namibia's Regional Police reported a rescue team has reached the crash site on the ground, the aircraft has completely burned down, there are no survivors.

On Nov 29th in the afternoon, a few hours after the aircraft disappeared, the airline released a press statement saying that they have information the aircraft landed in Rundu (Namibia) in northern Namibia. The airline and aviation authorities are currently trying to establish contact to verify the information. Late evening the airline stated, they still have no word about the whereabouts of C9-EMC.

Namibia's Authorities have initiated a search for the aircraft confirming the aircraft had been last heard over northern Namibia. The aircraft has not landed on Rundu's Airport. There are unverified reports of the aircraft having gone down 200km/108nm east of Rundu, a national park with mainly wetlands and dense forests.

Mozambique's government said, it can not be ruled out that the aircraft crashed in the border region of Namibia and Botswana, a search for the aircraft is underway in both countries. The search however is hampered by very bad weather in the region and darkness. The government still hopes the aircraft managed a forced landing in the forested area.

On Saturday (Nov 30th) the airline reported the search for the aircraft is ongoing in Botswana, Namibia and Angola. The aircraft carried 10 citizens of Mozambique, 9 Angolans, 5 Portugese, 1 French, 1 Brazilian and 1 Chinese citizen, 1 passenger and the crew not yet listed. As of current Namibian police helicopters are searching the area, that is forested without roads, the search is extremely difficult therefore.

On Nov 30th 2013 Namibia's Regional Authorities of the Kavango Region reported that Authorities in Botswana saw smoke and heard explosions on Friday (Nov 29th) afternoon shortly after the time of loss of contact with the aircraft and informed their Namibian Counterparts. Another short time later villagers sent photos suggesting the aircraft had crashed in the region, due to weather rescue teams were able to reach the crash site on Saturday only.

On Nov 30th 2013 Botswana Authorities reported they originally thought the aircraft had crashed within the boundaries of Botswana, a search was launched. On Friday (Nov 29th) about 15:00L (14:00Z) search personnel observed smoke and explosions on Namibian territory and informed Namibian Authorities.

On Nov 30th 2013 Portugal's Foreign Ministry reported the passenger listed Brazilian has in fact dual citizenship of Portugal and Brazil.

On Nov 30th 2013 14:45Z Mozambique's government, the airline as well as most of Mozambique's media are not reporting the aircraft has been found but still maintain the aircraft is missing. Mozambique's government confirmed however the aircraft was the newest Embraer 190 in LAM's fleet (thus identifying C9-EMC too).

On Nov 30th 2013 rangers of Bwabwata National Park reported that both blackboxes (flight data and cockpit voice recorder) have been found and recovered by accident investigators.

On Nov 30th 2013 17:30L (15:30Z) the airline confirmed the Embraer ERJ-190 tailnumber C9-EMC manufactured in 2012 has crashed killing all 27 passengers (revised from previous day where the airline stated 28 passengers) and 6 crew. The aircraft had entered service with the airline on Nov 17th 2012 and had since accumulated 2905 flight hours in 1877 flight cycles.

Aviation sources reported that according to radar data the aircraft suddenly started to descend at about 5000 feet per minute until the aircraft disappeared from radar. Radio contact was lost at the same time. The captain of the flight was a senior pilot with over 4000 hours with LAM and also held an instructor rating, the first officer had about 1000 hours of total flight hours with airlines in Mozambique. The captain had repeatedly flown the route.

The airline operates 3 Embraer ERJ-190 registrations C9-EMA, C9-EMB and C9-EMC. The airline also operates two Embraer ERJ-145, two Boeing 737-200s (which are already phased out however) and one Boeing 737-500. The subsidiary Mocambique Express operates 3 Embraer EMB-120 and 3 de Havilland Dash 8-400s.

EMBRAER ERJ 145 LR | ROLLS-ROYCE AE 3007 MACH 0,78 (828 KM/H) | PASSAREDO LINHAS AÉREAS

This jet belonged the Passaredo between 2009 and 2012, when it was retired then. With superior speed to the current ATR 72-600 jets, the ERJ models, however, has not been kept in fleet due the greater fuel economy, greater operating capacity and lower cost of maintenance of the french manufacturer.
