Still looks horrible because of the A/C units and the windows. Also, maybe the colors chosen were not the best either.

Certainly is, but at least the block itself is something to look at though

Decently painted in Poland, no flashy clashy colours

Old Soviet-era khrushchyovki that are looking less than stellar these days are receiving big facelifts now across Kaliningrad.

Here's Leninskiy prospekt 4, before:

After:

It's a bit kitsch, but definitely a huge improvement nevertheless. I reckon they want to make them blend in better with the Preussian architecture around them, and of course get rid of some eyesores before the World Cup.

More here:

The architecturally interesting (great brutalism) but so incredibly out-of-place "House of the Soviets" will unfortunately remain the greatest eyesore of that city for the forseeable future.

That's actually pretty nice. The originals weren't exactly outstanding works of modernism, they were kind of kitschy too so definitely an improvement I'd say.

What's really annoying though is how they can do all those facade alterations and still not replace the old mismatching windows.
And if they want to remove eyesores they should get those ads off the streetscape.

That's exactly how a renewal of a commie-block should be done.

Very nice examples from Bulgaria, the country have a great commieblock potential and you can see it on old pictures with all this sexy white towers. Sadly their condition seem to be the worst in EU even behind Romania so German style renovation program certainly is a good idea, I wish we had something more centralized to deal with this issues in Poland rather than every housing estate/commune doing pretty much what they want most of the time not surprisingly with a rather mixed results.

I thought I'd cross post some more Bulgarian flat renovations.

Some flats getting prettier at Pernik.

Some flats in Stara Zagora.

Varna is looking pretty good too!

(This one shows how it was before and now too!)

Burgas still has some of my favorite renovations though. It's so nice looking.

I've taken these images from the Bulgarian section if anyone's curious.
