Balconys are a must have. I need to feel that the air in my house is not just inside. When the weather is nice (mid Mar-mid Jun and Sept-Nov ) all the air is usually circulated throughout the house. Even in the hot summer and cold winter I will air out the house if I have a busy saturday where I will be out of the house for a long time.

Do people have small cookouts on their apartment balcony?

I dont care, a large terrace is of course a plus. A small shed in corrugated iron hanging from the facade though is a minus.

I have! My balcony was large enough for love seat sized balcony bench and a small grill. The best feature was that it was on the top floor of a 4 story building and it faced south with no other tall structures near by. It received a lot of sun!

Balcony is must have for me. I have two balconies, one (small) I use as storage (big trash can), and large for bbq.

It has to be large enough to seat 6 people for dinner. In other words it needs to basically be a room outside otherwise it's largely useless to me. A minimum depth of 6ft.

Whether you need a balcony it depends where in the world you live; live in Alaska get two metres of snow probably won't want one. Live in a high rise in Australia or many other countries and you will want one.

I prefer to have a balcony if high rise living but I don't need one around my house.

Must have - they offer a calming zone from the rest of the apartment, with a little shade to prevent the sun from directly shining inside. This is very crucial during the hot and humid summer months. The balcony can also be used to dry clothes - save some electricity and keep the dryer off!

I like having a balcony so that my cats can go outside without leaving my apartment.
