UNESCO HERITAGE

HOI AN ANCIENT TOWN (FAIFO, PHỐ CỔ HỘI AN) - QUANG NAM PROVINCE, VIETNAM

THE CITY USED TO BE THE BIGGEST HARBOUR IN SOUTH EAST ASIA IN THE 1ST CENTURY (BELONG TO THE KINGDOM OF CHAMPA, A COUNTRY CONQUERED BY VIETNAM). CHAMPA PEOPLE CONTROLLED THIS HABOUR CITY FROM 1ST - 15TH CENTURY.

LATER HOI AN WAS AN IMPORTANT VIETNAM TRADING CENTER WHERE CHINESE, JAPANESE, DUTCH AND INDIANS SETTLED

IN 1535, PORTUGUESE ESTABLISHED A MAJOR TRADING CENTER IN HOI AN

IN THE 18TH CENTURY, HOI AN WAS CONDISERED BY CHINESE AND JAPANESE TO BE THE BEST DESTINATION FOR TRADING IN ALL OF SOUTH EAST ASIA, EVEN ASIA. ASIAN CERAMICS WERE TRANSPORTED FROM HOI AN TO SINAI, EGYPT.

IN 19TH, 20TH CENTURY, HOI AN'S NO LONGER A MAJOR PORT IN VIETNAM (REPLACED BY DANANG - NOW IS A BIGGEST CITY IN THE CENTRAL VIETNAM), HOI AN WAS A FORGOTTEN BACKWATER.

IN 1999, HOI AN WAS LISTED AS A UNESCO HERITAGE AS A SOUTH EAST ASIA TRADING PORT OF THE 15TH TO 19TH CENTURY.

THE ARCHITECTURE YOU SEE IN HOI AN ANCIENT TOWN NOW IS THE COMBINATION OF VIETNAMESE, CHINESE, JAPANESE, PORTUGUESE AND FRENCH ARCHITECTURE

HOI AN ANCIENT TOWN

HOI AN IS VERY FAMOUS FOR MAKING LANTERN IN VIETNAM. VISITORS OFTEN CALLED HOI AN AS A LANTERN TOWN OF VIETNAM.

IN THE 1ST AND 15TH DAY OF A MONTH (ACCORDING TO LUNAR CALENDAR, THE WHOLE TOWN IS TURNED OFF ALL ELECTRICITY, EVERYBODY ONLY USE LANTERN TO LIGHTING UP.

It's a great update, thanks for sharing such a wonderful pictures, one question aroused while looking at the pictures on this page and trhoughout the thread is; What does the color YELLOW mean in Vietnamese culture? It's been widely used on most buildings.

Yellow stands for nobility. How ever, that is not the reason why we Vietnamese use yellow on many buildings. For the reason, ask the French they did it first

There are two theories about many Vietnamese temples, pagodas are painted in yellow.

Firstly, this is the result of the French colonial time, as most of the French buildings here in many major cities are painted in yellow. French also did it with the Vietnamese temples here.

Secondly, this is the result of the last renovation by the last dynasty, the Nguyen dynasty in Vietnam. The temples inside the Vietnamese Forbidden city and many major temples, pagoda in Hue - a royal city also painted in yellow.
