NGUYEN NGHIEM'S TEMPLE AND TOMB

NGUYEN NGHIEM (阮儼) (1708-1776) IS A FATHER OF NGUYEN DU. HE WAS A VERY HIGH LEVEL MANDARIN OF THE LE TRUNG HUNG DYNASTY OF VIETNAM

IN LATER LIFE, HE WAS A VERY HIGH LEVEL MANDARIN (PRIME MINISTER) OF LORD TRINH. AT THAT TIME VIETNAM IS CONTROLED BY BOTH THE KING (LE TRUNG HUNG DYNASTY) AND THE LORDS (LORD TRINH AND LORD NGUYEN)

TRINH LORD FAVOURED NGUYEN NGHIEM VERY MUCH AND THE LORD BUILT A TEMPLE FOR NGUYEN NGHIEM BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY. THIS TEMPLE USED TO BE A VERY SACRED PLACE TILL THE UPER TEMPLE (MAIN TEMPLE) IS DESTROYED BY BOMB IN 1954, ONLY THE FRONT AND MIDDLE TEMPLE LEFT. EVERYBODY HAS TO GET DOWN THE HORSES AND TAKE OFF THEIR HATS WHEN PASSING THIS TEMPLE. THEY EVEN DONT DARE TO LOOK STRAIGHT INSIDE THE TEMPLE.

SINCE THE MAIN TEMPLE AND THE ALTAR IS DESTROYED, THE LOCAL PEOPLE NOW ALL FORGET ABOUT THIS TEMPLE.

Anyway, let's do one of those buildings.

Thế Tổ Miếu (short: Thế Miếu) - 世祖廟 is a place to worship emprors of the Nguyễn dynasty, the last emperial dynasty of Vietnam. This structure was built in 1821. It is one of the rare structrures in Huế that survived both the burning by the communist in 1947 and the American bombing in 1968.

Thượng Cng Miếu, Saigon.

Thượng Cng Miếu was first built in 1841. The current structure was an extension in 1937. The name Thượng Cng Miếu means shrine to the Grand Duke (Thượng Cng) L Văn Duyệt (1763-1832), the governor of Gia Định (Saigon) and the high commander of the southern army.

The tomb of Mạc Knh Cửu, (鄚敬玖), H Tin,

Mạc Cửu was born in Guangdong province in the late 1600s. He took refuge in the Khmer Empire during the Manchurian conquest. Becoming wealthy from trade, he later gather other Chinese refugees and created his own realm of H Tin within the territory of the decaying Khmer Empire. After a war against the Siam between 1687 and 1688, Mạc Cửu decided to offer his land to Lord Nguyễn Phc Chu of South Vietnam for protection and titles. That event created the boundary of modern Vietnam.
