MISC | Secret Metros Discussion

After viewing an urban explorer's photos i came across an image that struck me .. it is definitely one of the nicest subway trains i have ever seen in my life... unfortunately the image is now deleted and all i have is a small version saved, after asking around a russian told me it was one of two broken subway trains in the town of Sochi, however after searching online i did not find another image of them,
I simple want to know the real name for these train models or if they are indeed in sochi or another part of russia, If anyone could help me i would be tremendously greatful!! It's white/silver and has a golden circle with a colloseum building on the front, but the tunnel style is definately russian.
Here is the (Very small) image of the train with the trainspotters on the front :

Seeing the track I thought of a funicular, and apparently I was right: http://metropost.ru/funiculars/soche.html

Funicular of Ordjenikidze Sanatorium:

gauge: 1270 mm
length: 353 m
height: 72,5 m
gradient: 24 %
speed: 2,4 m per sec.
open in 1952
rebuilding in 1985

The photo has certainly been taken here, on the central switch: http://metropost.ru/funiculars/so5.jpg

Because in your photo I see four rails: http://oi45.************/4kwh91.jpg

About two years ago I described in details about this and all similar "secret government lines" in Russia

I believe Sochi was supposed to get a metro but it was called off and turned into a commuter railway.

Is there really a secret government subway? Or is that just urban legend?

Well, AFAIK, there were no plans to construct a metro in Sochi anyway, Sochi is a medium-sized city-seaside resort.

Well there is a some kind of goverment undeground subway in Moscow, unless it some elaborate fake from intelligence service including some fake buying of underground construction equipment and some fake trains.

You are wrong. Before global financial crisis, there existed official plans for construction of Light Metro line in Sochi for 2014 Winter Olympics. Due to a crisis, the project was changed from a light metro to a scaled down commuter style railway called the Sochi Aeroexpress. The line will connect the airport with Krasnaya Polyana ski resort with an intermediate stop in Adler.

Sochi Light Metro project page, NPO Mostovik Corporate (outdated) (Russian)
Well, it's looks more like a pipe dream for Mostovik, which is a big construction company.
Big companies like to create proposals like this, because it means earning money on construction works, but they often fail to push such proposal to local authorities....

Speaking of secret Russian metros, did that guy building his own metro in Lebedyan ever get it finished?

Unfortunately, this "guy" died on September 25, 2011. He was only initiator of Metro construction in Lebedyan.

Underground funiculars are cool. I don't understand how anyone would confuse it for a secret government train though. You can see the cable apparatus in the rails and the location would indicate it's in a resort. It's very typical of something in Switzerland, there's two in Southern California as well.

I'm sorry to heard that. I admired his nerve.

How do you know he died? I mean, was he famous in Russia?

I can not say so. He was famous only among narrow circle of Metro forumers and residents of this area. I was informed about this sad news at the transport forum (only after one year since his death).

Wikipedia has an article on Moscow's supposed secret Metro (or Metro-2). Maybe Russian sites would have more information?

Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro-2

What the US Military believes exists:

Washington DC also has a 'Government Metro' of sorts, though I think it's more of a people mover around main buildings. I believe Dick Cheney used it on September 11. I'm really not sure of how extensive it is.

On a similar note, the Australian Government is meant to have sometimes used abandoned tunnels under St James Station in Sydney during wartime for military operations. Now I believe the tunnels are largely flooded.

Well, it's not much knowledge about metro-2. The are some well established facts: It's likely no third rail in M2, because all trains are either battery-run (phased out) or diesel powered (built in late 2000s) - old trains. Also it's believed that rails are surrounded with concrete so it's possible to drive through system, and the line is single track with passing sidings.

All other data about the system are rather contradictory, with lots of fake information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_subway

There are multiple lines but at most they are only a few hundred meters long. It is just a people mover, because I guess our elected officials are geriatics who can't walk, or they don't want to be on the street hounded by the media every single time there's a vote.

It's not secret. And its OLD, the first section dates to 1909!

While it's not normally open to the public sometimes ordinary people get to use it if you have official business in the congress/senate office building.

Am I the only person who's really reminded of the Black Mesa facility from Half Life by this?

I've read a few times that the Pyongyang Metro is larger than the two public lines, with some sections only open to high-ranking officials.
