This is not the most populated building in the world, but what do you think about this monstruosity (also known as the "Jail") in Madrid? 346 appartments and more than 1000 people living there--->

In Eastern Europe there are plenty of buildings of similar size (length), but not of similar strange colour and tiny windows This one really looks as a jail

Only the "chinese wall" building. The towers have 520 flats in addition.

Le Lignon, outside of Geneva (probably the building with the most floorspace in Switzerland):

Copan, designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1951, built between 1957 and 1966, is said to be one of the largest in the world. There are 1,160 apartaments and about 2,000 people live in.

The Copan is a wonderful building. It embodies the urban Sao Paulo. It is, however, quite different from Niemeyer's first proposal.

Anyway, before the Copan, Niemeyer also designed a gigantic building which would house more than 5000 apartments. At 33 floors and 420 metres, it would compete with geographical features, such as the valley where it would have been built. Quite avant-garde for 1947!

Conjunto Quitandinha - Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro

Due to the scale of the project, it was not relised. However, the same entrepreneur comissioned Niemeyer to design the Conjunto JK, in Belo Horizonte (also in Brazil). This one houses aprox. 5000 people, in 1084 apartments.

The building took much longer than expected to be completed (the company went bankrupt during the construction). Therefore the occupation process and slow and in steps, which leat to a degradation of the complex. Today it is undergoing restoration, and it is very sought after by young couples and small families. It has a cult-retro feel to it.

It is not among Niemeyer's favourite projects. The elegant V-shapped pilotis which gave a light character to his best works had to be made thicker to resist wind forces. This gave an impression of weight which, coupled with the gigantic dimensions, looses the connection with the human scale.

However, it does show a Brazilian approach to Corbusier's concept of the Unité d'Habitation. The ground floor is an extension of the street, with shops, etc.

Not the biggest building over there, but the block where I've lived for some years now is quite large. It has 544 flats and about 2,000 inhabitants.

The view from my window (the block opposite is about the same size) :

I think people are overestimating the numbers of residents in those buildings. It seems everybody is just multiplying the number of apartments by 4.

For instance, in Brazil, there are 3.3 people per household (Census 2010). Considering only apartments, this number is probably much lower. I guess in most of those countries the average figure is even smaller, as in Brazil it's very common for middle-class families raise their children in apartments.

depends what part of the world it is in as well. here in Toronto it is quite rare for a new condo to have more than two or three people in one unit. I wouldn't be surprised if the average is 2.1 or 2.2 people per unit. but with 28,000 units sold last year, there are still a lot of people moving here!

I bet in condos, the Toronto average is below 2 people/unit. Maybe even as low as 1.7.

Zagorye quartier in Moscow. It has 2750 flats and can accommodate up to 8000 inhabitants when finished.
