The dirt, litter, and chewing gum on pavements, the vomitting etc... is getting worse in town

Business rates are already rising from an already high level. I imagine Tesco, Greggs, Starbucks and McDs could swallow it but what about the smaller independents who are already struggling? The little corner shops, sandwich bars and the like? Do they pass this tax on to their customers, 95% of who don't drop their litter?

In the office we've just been discussing an area of Manchester where it appears that businesses are just chucking rubbish out of the back door into the street, so we had a look on the council website to see where environmental crime should be reported, and the list below just appears to be returning a load of broken links:

Well, something has to be done and as we, collectively, have rejected the 'socialist' route of paying higher taxes for good services the only other way is the capitalist way of charging for services, where those that create the problem pay for it. Either that or we let it pile up, creating disease and smells and driving people away from the City Centre altogether - and where will businesses be then?

There is a reason why collective solutions developed in the first place - they solved problems like this, and everyone was better off in the end. Our ancestors figured this out in the late 19th Century.

Complain and humiliate them,. In fact get the MEN n it. About time, something has to be done to embarrass pests.

Somehow I doubt the Manchester Environmental Agency is effective... You can only see the success of their result walking through town.

Indeed, but borne out of the fact that many of the health issues of the period, such as Cholera and Small Pox, didn’t discriminate between rich or poor; the killing of a few monarchs and dignitaries along the way had encouraged them to seek those solutions.

Had they affected just the poor like malaria or HIV they probably wouldn’t have bothered either, much like today.

Unfortunately I imagine HeatonParkin Towers with Messrs Leese and Bernstein for neighbours benefits from a better council cleaning service than the rest of the city hence why they and he are fairly nonplussed about the issues. As people have said the Town hall and Spinningfields also seem to have avoided any cuts to their cleaning rota.

Always seems to be cash for propping up "friends" failing architects practises & highly speculative property developers and buying airports, with any small change tucked into the g-string of passing MTV starlets.

Also: who decided covering graffiti with not-quite-matching-the-existing-wall-behind rollered paint is a better solution than actually removing it properly?

At todays full council meeting at Bury Metro, leader Clr Connolly remarked that since BMBC had outsourced their litter enforcement "service" , complains had been noted of alleged over zealousness in said enforcement. But he council still encourages enforcement.

Better tell me neighbours Betty Leese and Ethel Bernstein then.

Was walking through St Anne's Square this afternoon and it appears that the pavements have been cleaned. Chewing gum has been remove and all the paving has been cleaned. Looks loads better but there's already 'fresh' chewing gum been dropped on the floor which is a shame.

Has anybody seen the state of the car park to the convenience store on Trafford Rd j/w Ordsall Lane? It's getting worse. There is littler piling up all over the area. My tram goes past every day and it is really an unpleasant sight.

I have tried contacting the council but they can't do anything as it's private land. I tried writing a letter to the shop owners but that was a couple of months ago and it's gotten worse since.

Is there anything that can be done in law when it is on private land? It is an eyesore to everyone that uses the area and really brings the area down when it is supposedly on the up.

NQ, who did you contact at SCC? I just wonder because I'm pretty sure they can do something about it (I've seen how bad it is!), surely environmental health will take action....?

I have raised it twice online as a litter issue. Each time the report has been cancelled by Salford Council and I got a standard response email that it could have been cancelled due to a number of reasons. One of them being that the litter was on private land. I am assuming this is the reason they are cancelling my report.

I have sent an email this evening to environmental health but I am not sure if that will really do much good. If it doesn't I will give them a call next week and see if I can speak to somebody about it.

I can't believe that local residents:

A) Would want to look right onto that mess without complaining

and

B) Would even consider shopping in a place that is surrounded by so much litter. This is a shop that sells food.

This area is bascially your introduction to Salford when coming across from Manchester by tram. It is one of the first sights that you see when crossing into Salford. I can't believe that the owners have traded for so long and think it's acceptable to just leave it as it is.

Sometimes a telephone call or proper letter works better. Emails are easily lost. Litter, on private land isn't the councils problem but what resides behind that little shop is far worse than that, its pretty much illegal dumping, probably attracting vermin and creating a health hazard, let alone an eyesore. Give SCC a call, if that doesn't get a response tell the shop owner you're going to the press, if that doesn't work do go to the MEN...

Are you talking about the land behind the East West store? of you are then its private land, I think what might be happening here is that so much work has been carried out on those retail units recently that even more rubbish has come to light, but as has been mentioned earlier is that this land is private and therefore doed not come under the remit of SCC, what of course you could do is speak to the manager/owner of the store point out that they are a food out let and thus have obligations to keep their premises and property clean and when do they intend cleaning the car park up, or of course you could contact environmental health and they will investigate this quickly.

Why dont you pick the litter up yourself if its bothering you that much , you will feel proud of yourself everytime you go past on the tram and the litter is not there .

Urghhhh.... today in Castlefield in the wild grass going (near the Castlefield Congregation Chapel - that is always for sale) area my dogs sniffed out several drug needles, full of blood.

In town yesterday around the Arndale area, I was pretty disgusted to see the state of litter strewn on the pavements. I'm pretty sure certain areas in town are getting worse, it never seemed to be this bad about five years ago. I go to Liverpool and they seem to do a pretty good job of keeping things clean, I go into Manchester and it seems to be a dump, what the hell is going on?!
