OGR Cultural Centre
Turin - District 3 (Cit Turin)

Status:U/C

The OGR (in italian: Officine Grandi Riparazioni) represents one of the most important examples of industrial architecture in Turin dating from the late 19th Century. Located in a central area of huge urban transformation this complex is expected to become the new heart of culture and technological research in the city.

The redevelopment project proposes a number of different activities to be located here: from a theatre for concerts and spectacles to areas for modern art and various expositions, including spaces for start up and innovative companies. A unique complex where culture and research will join living together.

"Palazzo del Lavoro" Redevelopment Project
Turin - District 8 (Nizza Millefonti)

Status:approved

The project will transform this majestic building (now abandoned) in a modern commercial complex

The initiative involves refurbishing the palace designed by Pier Luigi Nervi for the 1961 Universal Exposition and creating a completely new look for this area of Turin. The main interior and exterior elements (including the 16 high columns) of Nervi's distinctive design, that is widely recognised as a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, will remain unaltered.

The project will seek to integrate the building more effectively with the surrounding area by enlarging and landscaping various park areas so they are more accessible. Two plazas will also be constructed and both the public lighting system and street furniture will be improved.

I am so glad to see how Torino is getting amazing projects. For me is one of the biggest city in Italy still underrated inside the country and abroad. Torino deserves more recognition around the world. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend 2 years and to get my undergraduate at the PoliTo.

Mondo Juve
Nichelino - Turin Metropolitan Area

Designed by: “Design International”
Status:U/C

---------------------------------

The first phase of the project is going to be completed in September; 35.000 square meters occupied by 90 shops, more than 10 restaurants and an ipermarket. The second phase of the project is expected to start very soon.

The symbol of the complex will be a 30 meters high steel "totem" that reminds the shape of the trees in the logo

Well...I personally like it but yeah I perfectly understand what you mean; many people in Turin think the same and they already call it "The Fridge" because of its boxy shape...
However this is not the only highrise planned for that area; another tower (150 m high) is planned to be built near the new Porta Susa railway station but for the moment this is just a project, construction works will not cearteinly start in next years...

The images above are just renderings to show how this new tower will fitt in the area. Last rumours said that if some investors will want to build it in the next years the final design may be created by Daniel Libeskind who already was in the race to project the other tower arriving at the second place behind Renzo Piano...this was Libeskind's project for that tower...

Despite the economic crisis of the last years Turin remain the third most important city in Italy for its economy after Milan and Rome and is stably the 4th most populated city in the country with a metropolitan area of approximately 1.7 million people. Every year the metropolitan city of Turin produces a GDP of nearly 55,000 million euro that represent the 4.5% of the national GDP. The city still have a great importance in manifacturing, automotive and textile industries while it is also developing other sources of production such as telecommunication and aerospace industries.
With its 2 well-known universities Turin is also becoming an important city in terms of instruction and research (in particular in the high-tech sectors); in the last years both universities have invested so much in the city building new campus, laboratories and houses for students contributing to the transformation of many unused and abandoned areas. Many national companies are investing in the city with some interesting projects like the new HQ of local companies such as Lavazza and Reale Mutua or the transformation of many post industrial areas. Also the real estate market after many years of crise seems to be recovering; still with many difficulties in the last period have emerged some new residential projects as well as restoration of historic and abandoned buildings. Tourism is also becoming an important source of money and many hotel companies are investing in the city; after the 2006 Winter Olympics Turin has seen an impressive growth in the number of visitors, also thanks to the importance of its artistical heritage and to the beauty of its museums (in 2000 less than one million tourists; more than six millions in 2015).
I think that a huge problem of the city is its inability to attract foreign investors, maybe because it is still not well known around the world...nearly all the projects on this thread are financied by local or national investors...
