The opening of the Granada "metro" will take place sometime next month, according to the authorities. Let's see if this time they manage to stick to their promises...

According to some sources it could open next week:

But they also warn that it won't open until trams manage to do the whole line in 50 minutes. They're still having some problems with traffic lights in roundabouts.

Some details of the stops. You can also see the planned operation schedule:

Looks like the Granada metro (actually a tram) will be inaugurated this Thursday 21 September at 12:00. Source (in Spanish)

AT LAST!

Some pictures and videos from the opening day (cross-posting from the Andalusian sub-forum):

Una máquina en Alcázar Genil no aceptaba billetes, la otra me ha devuelto el cambio pero sin billete, en fin... pero había dos "metro-guías" allí que estaban pendientes de la gente. En esa estación solo daban tarjetas de cartón, de las recargables de un año de validez. Me han dicho que tarjetas rígidas dan en Recogidas. Las impresiones en cuanto a funcionamiento y estado final de la obra, muy positivas. A ver si saco algo de tiempo esta tarde y me doy un viaje más largo...

Three days in, and already overcrowded at certain times and certain stops. Not bad at all.

Particularly overcrowded stops were Sierra Nevada (because of the neighbouring Nevada shopping mall), Nuevo Los Cármenes (where the Granada football team plays), and Recogidas (the closest to the Granada old centre -Alhambra, cathedral, etc).

Our platform, bound for Armilla, wasn't as crowded but the tram was already packed when it arrived (see second pic), so the trip till the Nevada was "interesting".

Another factor which may explain the number of passengers, aside from the obvious demand for it, is that Granada used to have an extensive suburban tramway network in the past, which was closed in the early 1970's, and the older people remember it well (and so do some of the middle-aged people who more or less remember the old trams from when they were kids -or at least the abandoned rails), and are glad to have it back and in a modern version.

A nice one.

A tram bound for Armilla departing from Caleta stop, and about to turn right for Avenida Andaluces and the railway station.
In hindsight, the old town and Sierra Nevada.

The same location as in the previous picture, but seen from the tram tracks.

Granada is always fascinating, but I must admit that the snow in the background adds a magical touch.
