I wonder if Shenzhen and Guangzhou could really be one city?

No, there's plenty of speculation that Hong Kong-Guangzhou-Shenzhen will be the first megalopolis to surpass the 100,000,000 mark.

Actually, HongKong-ShenZhen-DongGuan-GuangZhou-Foshan, plus Huizhou touching SZ and DG, is already the world's largest and most populous contiguous city urban area. I travelled all over the area past few months, and it really feels like one large supercity with many centers and CBDs. I believe the real current population of that contiguous area would be around 80 million people. By 2020 or so, when all their metro system touch each other too, and 200 km/h CRH6 'supercommuter' trains are in place as well, it will even transportation wise be one city fully...

A few days ago, the air was so clear that, from Shenzhen Bay Bridge between HK and SZ, you could clearly see Macau towers 60 km across the bay! And funnily, the clear air continued all the way up to Guangzhou CBD, when taking the HSR to there from SZ.

How many residents will Qianhai be able to host?

I look at Qianhaiwan from my living room window right now... depending on the density, if you compare it with neighboring Nanshan and Bao'an Center, maybe 300,000 mid to high class condo residents, plus the dominant office and retail use

One thing, I watch airplanes at low altitude non stop taking off from Baoan right over Qianhaiwan, following roughly the S3 new coastal highway route, I really don't see how they can change that height restriction... in fact, maybe, 320 m listed in those most recent land offers there might be quite near the maximum height limit there, as Shekou hills next to it are about that high too. Notice that all developments in the area seem now to be capped at 400m?

I wouldn't mind a sea of 300-400m towers.

Actually, I agree on this one - I feel it's more likely that one or more 800+ m towers, or even a hypertall, would be built in "old" Luohu or Futian CBDs as those have not only the density, including many massive metro interchanges coming up, but also the govt is trying to refresh them as quite a number of short land leases there may be coming up...

Remember the Kingkey Caiwuwei 666++ m, for instance... no airplane landing paths there, and smack in the city center.

I wouldn't mind a sea of 200-350m too, if they want an 800m tower they better build it in Futian.

So there is no proof at all that it may be a megatall here. And flight restrictions even suggests there will be barely supertalls here? Seems to me like this thread was a bit premature.

Maybe don't close this thread but I would consider renaming it to the qianhai district as we have threads for districts with supertalls here in supertalls section.

if there has to be a spire, then 800m roof height, 900m spire height is what we want

i am pretty sure they will try to market this new area by putting a landmark tower inside, whether this tower will only be "400m" or a country's tallest, can only be told by the future.
