I hope I can add Sky City soon!

EDIT: it seems that Sky City is prep! I will probably update my maps in a couple of weeks when I have uni holidays.
Yes, sky city is under Prep. already

In Mumbai 50 floors are common. Another 5 years into the future it will be 60-70 floors.

because that's not how best polynomial approximation works. you have to solve (A^T)*A*x=(A^T)*b, which means that whatever degree of a polynomial function you want to describe you describe it as the function where the distance of all the data is in the sum the smallest. what you did was just looking at the outlier data, which is not the way to go to begin with.

An exponential curve would be better for that I would think.
With a polynomial approximation, if you go back in time, buildings get bigger again!

Some time this week, I will update my maps.
One thing I will do is try to work out a way to make more placemarks visible.
On Google Maps, threre is a limit of 200 per 'page', which isn't really enough for all the supertalls!

I also see a rythm there..going up and down ?

How can that be solved in future estimates ?

It also seems to lack the reality concerning natural resources like oil;

an exponential curve would of course be even more amazing but after all with things like that there are ups and down and i think it won't get exponentially crazy in the near future.

can't you only work with google earth instead, most of the people using your data save it in google earth anyways, because then you can always get the newest photos and compare them with the progress of how the area looked around it months and years ago.

That might be a good idea actually.
I wonder how difficult it would be to make an 'interactive' map where the status depends on the time/year.
A building would start off as 'proposed', then at the appropriate time, it would change to 'approved', then 'prep', 'U/C', 'T/O', and then finally 'Complete'.
Hopefully it would also show the appropriate historical imagery too.

It should be possible to automate the generation of the KML file, all I would need to do is enter the name, location, and height of the building, and the date ranges for each status.
I could even put in future dates to show what will be completed at a particular time.

I'm not sure if it would be possible to make a sorted list of the buildings as well, but if all the buildings are shown at the same time, it shouldn't be a huge issue.

It would take a lot longer to do than the previous maps, but it would be a lot more informative.

after doing some research and playing around a bit with KML code, this is what I will do:
there will be a separate file for each 'status', each of these containing most of the buildings that have been at that status.
I say most, because some details are difficult to find, for example, I am not sure when the ESB was topped off, so it will be in the U/C map, then move straight to the Complete map. Finding details about when buildings were first proposed or approved will also be hard, so a lot of complete and some U/C buildings won't be on these lists.
The different statuses:
Proposed
A supertall building has been proposed
Approved
A supertall building has been officially approved
Preparation
clearing the site has begun
Foundations
The foundations have started
Groundbreaking
The construction of the building has 'officially' started
Rising
The building is above ground and rising
On Hold
Construction of the building has stopped temporarily
WHen it resumes, it will return to 'Rising'
Cancelled
the building has been cancelled
Topped Off
The structure has been topped off, and a part of it has reached the final height
Complete
The building is complete externally
Officially opened
The building has had an official opening ceremony
Demolished
Supertall buildings that have been demolished for some reason :-(

Most buildings won't have all of the details, but after the earliest status, they will be on the map permanently.
The way the statuses will work is that, when a building reaches a particular status, it will appear in that map, and disappear from the previous ones. If there is insufficient data, some statuses will be missed.
I will create a separate KML file for each, so you can download only the ones you want, so for example, you don't want the cancelled buildings, or the proposed ones.
In theory, it will be possible to slide the time slider to whatever time you want and see how many supertalls there are in the world at that time.
I may add towers as well, and possibly all freestanding structures including towers and buildings that technically aren't supertalls but have a mast that is above 300m
I may not do all the statuses I have mentioned, some are complex (some buildings are officially opened before they are technically complete, etc.)
Also, for buildings like Federation that have been O/H several times, they will appear in the U/C maps several times, but never more than once at any particular time. Also if 'U/C' is downloaded but not 'O/H', then there will be times when the Federation Tower is not there!
Still got a lot of thinking to do, but hopefully I will make some progress during this week.

wow that sounds like an awesome interactive map, but also like a LOT of work. especially for old and chinese buildings you might get a problem finding all the data you need. i hope google earth really can do the features you plan to implement, since i have no idea how you would do a kind of time slider. but i am sure, you will figure something out that works.
