My city vs Your City (official city bashing thread)

I am simply answering Jane's question about why Manc forumers get into arguements with people from all the other cities.

Also, you have not explained why you see the types of posts that we saw in the Liverpool retail thread a couple of weeks ago, the BBC biased thread in the Brum forum - these are not positive posts / threads about Manchester.

All I do is point out that people do mention Manchester, in a more negative manner, on a more frequent basis than other places - that answers Jane's initial question.

I will draw your attention back to the post I missed earlier from East - he justifies his continued anti-Manc bashing, his unhealthy obsession as in his mind it is not ok for a Manc to claim second city status, it offends him when a Manc claims that all of GM is Manchester - yet he does not apply the same rules to other people from other cities.

His obsession is such that Brummies can claim second city status - that is right in his opinion so it is ok, however, because in his opinion he disagrees with the odd Manc that posts such things it is ok for his continual (many years now) negativity towards Manchester on all sorts of areas.

He is not alone - their are many people who do exactly the same thing, over and over again.

He is not alone - far to many people are exactly the same - their negative opinion towards Manc - that is not replicated towards other cities - is an excuse they use to ignite argument through their petty obsessions.

It doesn't happen to other cities, because other cities don't have a squad of trolls who search the forums for mentions of their city, arguing and posting condescending rubbish to anybody who expresses an opinion on that city that is the slightest bit negative

I dont think anyone activley searches for it - i've never looked at the thread LNG posted, and to be honest people can talk to their hearts content about their dislike of Manchester on the Liverpool sub-forum - That is their choice but when it appears on the Manc sub-forum time after time (by the same person) it does become tiresome and we just want to too stop. Anyway you are one of the decent Liverpool guys so dont want to argue with you about it

You'd be surprised. At one stage they'd pop up almost instantaneously at the first negative mention of Manchester, and kill off the discussion with scores of posts of nitpicking, hyperbole and condescension.

and I found one in particular which will bolster your argument. The post was to do with Liverpool's accent, "Scouse" being the "most unique in all English". This quote was gleaned, according to the poster, from a book and BBC TV series titled, "The Story of English". This statement was immediately pounced upon by the usual suspects and disparaged, strenuously. Later in the thread proof was supplied by the published writings of various linguists and academics but, and again by the usual suspects, these were ridiculed. Cruise liner stage, airport, WHS, Iconic structures etc., have all fell foul of the zealots and, when/if anyone dares argue the opposite corner they are automatically dubbed "haters". So, it is my claim that the name doesn't even need a mention, just an accolade bestowed on a rival city will suffice. The latest, to my knowledge, can be seen in the 'Liverpool John Lennon Airport' thread were I stated (in post # 2829) that I thought LPL would benefit, like every other airport worldwide, which has become a major cruise ship base. It seemed every single argument that could be presented against this idea was and, by the usual suspects. No "negativity" against ANY other location was ever displayed in my original post.

Anyway, this is still the "City bashing thread" is it not?

To be completely fair there were many discussions that deserved to die.

No forum is above such nonsense (should Manchester bid for the Winter Olympics is my favourite recent example of delusional crap) but the Liverpool forum has in the past revelled in creating its own reality and then refusing to engage with anyone who doesn't agree with it.

I'd say the problem with many of both city's posters is that too many people believe the local hype*, and having internalised that mindset struggle when it is challenged. Since we are able to look much more rationally at our neighbour's city, irritating them, it leads to conflict. Maybe if we call all reflect on our cities with a little more maturity and on other's with a little more diplomacy/less insane posturing we'd all get along just a little better?

*Except LGN, who's never met hyperbole, a daydream or supposition that he wouldn't like to beat to death with a rusty shovel.

There is just as much of a bizarre alternate reality in the Manchester forum as there is elsewhere. If you can't see that perhaps you're in too deep?

I don't believe a forum to have a personality of its own, I think there wouldn't be much discussion if everyone was in agreement. That sort of overly-simplistic rationalisation is best left to Kurt and his dictatorial view of the world. Most of the bickering revolves around the simple fact that a lot of Mancs and a lot of Scousers look down their noses at one another, and its usually the same few who turn up on the others forum to share their knowledge, post a barbed rebuttal or just revel in some bad news.

It's a discussion on the Manchester forum, pretty much left as a discussion. If there was a similar discussion in the Leeds, Pool or Brum forum, there would be a few on here rubbing there hands and flooding it with shite.

Mad John, his entourage, and the Manc trolls have made that forum unusable at times, a lot of people have just given up with it. It needed a dedicated moderator.

Pretty much ever since its been created the Liverpool forum has been difficult to post in for those who didnt go along with the ideas which were conceived there...an example being that Liverpool is the real capital of Wales, or the Merseyrail network being referred to as the underground. Basically stuff that doesnt really have any standing outside of SSC. Yet when new people come along and didnt go along with it, they were treated as some kind of invalid. If anything I'd say the forum is more realistic now than it gas been, thanks to the reality check of the economic crisis. But of course, the Liverpool forum is pretty dead these days.

I think your difficulty stems from your snide comments eg signing books of condolence, rather than the awfulness of discussing something with someone who thinks an underground station is underground.

You know what I mean. There is nothing wrong with people going on there as a newcomer and wondering why such American terms are used for a British city. Probably goes a long way towards explaining why the Liverpool forum is such a ghost town these days, as well as some pretty poor moderation examples in the past. It's a pity, because there are (and have been before they left) some great contributions.
