Zaandam (Noord-Holland)

You probably haven't even heard of Zaandam. There are so many things about this town located in the municipality of Zaanstad that make it worth exploring. I'll try to show you the different faces of the town and surrounding areas. I hope you'll like the places shown in the pictures and that you'll find the thread interesting.
(All the photos I took between November and December 2012)

Thanks for viewing!

Did you know...
Quote:
In 1871 the impressionist painter Claude Monet painted several pictures of the area, including Palatino Linotype Bateaux en Hollande pres de Zaandam and A windmill at Zaandam.

Interesting modern Dutch architecture. Do you have another picture of that building in the background of the second photo?

I'm not sure what to think about it though.

Thanks for these nice pictures of Zaandam! A friend of mine lives there, and I had never been there until a few years ago. I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I first went there, as is it is a bit more chaotic looking than other Dutch towns.

Also, I think that hotel next to the station (the pile of wooden houses), is a bit kitsch as well as cool.

I see what you mean but I think they're hilarious, it would brighten up one's day passing them in your town. But the effect might wear off after a while.

I find the mid-rise not ugly or funny but architecturally daring. It looks like it was made by putting together traditional Dutch houses (which there are plenty of in that area).
Thanks to those kind of buildings (and other structures) it is a real joy to explore Dutch towns and cities.

In this case more chaotic means more interesting. I had a lot of fun wandering across Zaanstad. Even in the most gritty parts of the area I never felt unsafe.

I totaly agree, as I sometimes miss a bit of chaos in the Netherlands! Also I don't remember ever feeling unsafe anywhere in the Netherlands.

By the way, I was in your city for one day last summer, and I must say I also found it really interesting, with a lot of nice architecture! Any chance of a Katowice photothread?

The central part of Katowice currently looks like a big construction site since a major redevelopment of the city center is taking place. I think I'll start a thread dedicated to Katowice when the main construction projects are completed.
