With this also being over 400m new york is very likely to get the first place when comparing cities, with the number of 400m buildings complete and u/c. A few years ago, I would have thought that to be very unlikely, but this all is possible with this crazy residential boom.

YEEEEES! fantastic!

Great height, rivaling the WTC, whilst keeping the design minimalistic so that the designs of the WTC stand out more, the slimness contrasts well with the Massive WTC towers complimenting one another

Despite just be a glass box, i love the mechanical floors with the sort of 'box' at the top

Sleek, clean and bookends the WTC from the other end

If anything, I find this build really defines the next layer of supertall skyscrapers in downtown which only works well with the WTC

Also, who knows; it could contain many little details to bring it out

Looking closely at this render, there appears to be vertical lines running down the facade, but not across (which would show floors), perhaps this is one of those little details:

Well, when I first saw the renderings for 432 Park which is similar to this, I wasn't excited. But that turned out really well, so I'm staying optimistic.

Nonoka you might be right but the skyline is evolving in NY and according to the contemporary height standards One WTC has no legitimity to define it.Also i think that 125 Greenwich as it is thin and sleek echos with subtlety One WTC spire.New york is not a dusty museum, it is the world's capital city and laboratory.New York as a leader has to take risks and after a few decades of relative sleep is back on track. In Europ,Paris is dying to pay too much respect to his past for the great benefit of London in terms of prestige.I decide to trust Vinoly and NY city planning....

Agree, think it ruins the WTC. It's like the "architect" designed it with no idea of its surroundings.

Yes, I think this is the first time I've been upset about a height increase.

First.. Good job & congrats to Yimby!!

2nd.. The design is a bit lame and it's lazy. There was an article quoting SHoP that they have another 3 supertalls for NYC planned and I was really hoping that this was one of them.

With that said no one can say a boxy skyscraper looks out of place in NYC. Lol.

SHVO needs this to really stand out design wise to compete amongst the Billionaire super towers and more importantly compete with 30 Park Place and I'm hoping this is just a massing and there will be revisions to come.

If not, hope it's the details that will make it surprising. Cheers.

I heard this was the inspiration for the design:

Hmmmm. We've known something like this was coming for a while so it's not that huge of a shock, but I still have mixed feelings about it.

I never want to discourage development in the ever-changing city, but I am bummed that this destroys the visual coherence of the WTC site plan. But rather than mourning it, I just hope that it encourages others to make similarly tall, daring towers surrounding the WTC to the North, East and South. That should help the complex feel more integrated with the rest of downtown...

The problem is, it's hard for me to envision. 30 Park, 50 West, etc., are already pushing the boundaries of ultra luxury development Downtown. This tower is going to be asking far more exorbitant prices and if it doesn't get them, well, consider the Downtown luxury bubble popped (and don't hold your breath for more towers this tall for a long time). Here's hoping the market is more robust than it appears at first blush.

As for the design... I dunno, it's early, and like 432 Park there are probably hidden details that will make the glass box stand out. Viñoly is a master of subtlety. But at the same time, I had been hoping that maybe SHoP was handling this tower and that we'd get something with a little more sense of history and context. Downtown Manhattan, much more than Midtown, IS Gotham, and I would have loved to see something reminiscent of those great Neogothic towers that once defined the skyline.

But I'm sure I'll grow to be fine with it.

I wonder if we'll see this start and top out before WTC3 and 4?

To me this design, although much like 432, really pushes what a typical glass box can do, very futuristic in my eyes also it looks like the top is illuminated?

I'm a fan of 432 but come on this is ridiculous, doesn’t fit in at all with its surroundings IMO. I hope they change the design, the height I can live with, Manhattan is ever changing so the WTC towers couldn't remain a focal point for very long. But good God is that building boring.

Had a similar thought. Another tower or two could restore the balance this project threatens.

Yea hopefully with 101 Murray at 950' and 80 South at 1000' + would balance things a bit in lower Manhattan. Of course not forgetting with a completed 2 WTC.

This may be tall, but it will never compare to the sheer size of the WTC towers. Even then, it will stand out quite a bit considering Downtown doesn't have too many 1000+ footers.

I think people are having the same reaction to the scale of this tower as they originally were to 432 PA

There will be a few more supertalls and near supertalls being built in downtown soon which will really balance this skyline out, much like how the other 57th street towers will balance 432 out!

I can understand people about the design though

I like the cut out cantilever part or whatever you call it. I hope that it would be glassy/ mirror like and it would be cool standing under it and looking up to it.

Vinoly's design looks similar to SOM's 45 East 22nd street but taller and boxier.

What cantilever part are you talking about?
