SÃO PAULO: Chinese New Year's Celebrations 2013

Having nothing to do last Sunday trapped here in São Paulo, I decided to go to Liberdade (largest Japanese district in the world outside Japan) to watch the Chinese New Year's celebrations.

Cell phone pics, so bad quality. The idea is just to show you guys a little bit of the streets' vibe.

Leaving the subway station:

I was there in 2012, the year of the dragon. I still remember the awesome smell of the food.

Fantastic people shots, Yuri! I'm very surprised that even in São Paulo (especially Japantown), Chinese New Year is a popular affair as well! I also didn't know that the city has the largest Japantown anywhere in the world outside Japan... I am particularly surprised at how popular the area is — given the number of people going through its streets — and I wonder how many temples are located in the area as well. I also wonder if a pagoda has been erected in the area as well, and I want to ask if instead of a Dragon Gate, a Torii (Japanese arch) stands at the district's main pathways.

Really lively and magnificent place!

Fields, Brazil harbours the largest Japanese diaspora in the world: between 1 and 1.5 million Japanese and descendants live here. Virtually all of them live in São Paulo capital, parts of são Paulo state's hinterland and northern Paraná state. Visit the thread in my signature "Londrina: Little Tokyo" for more info (plus pics of the 100 years of immigration celebrations in Londrina and northern Paraná).

Specifically about Liberdade, it's São Paulo's Japanese district, and therefore the largest in the world. Japanese got wealthy and most of them left the place. Now, waves of Chinese and Korean immigrants are settling there (they're about 150,000 in the city already). As you can see in the photos, there're still plenty of Japanese there.

I'm not an expert, but the arch is Japanese for sure. Liberdade is indeed very lively, full of galleries, restaurants, and you always finding something new there.

Thank you for posting, Fields!

I forgot to mention: this year is the snake. About the food, I just smelled it. I can't stand lines. Thank you, Tourniquet!
