HIGH FLYERS: THE BEST AIRPORTS NAMED AT WORLD ROUTES

Airport World reveals which airports impressed the airlines with their route development focused marketing initiatives.

The world’s airlines have spoken by voting Brussels Airport the overall winner in the Routes Airport Marketing Awards.

Belgium’s capital city gateway also won the regional prize for Europe in the annual marketing excellence awards presented at Routes/UBM.

The other regional winners were Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (Americas; Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Africa; Ekaterinburg Koltsovo International Airport (CIS category; and Singapore Changi (Asia).

Darwin International Airport scooped the award in a new category for airports handling less than four million passengers yearly.

Leon Verhallen, head of aviation marketing at Brussels Airport was in positive spirits after the awards ceremony. “We have reached the top following our win tonight,” he said. “I don’t think we can go any higher than achieving this reward.”

Airport CEO, Arnaud Feist, added: “The credit goes to our marketing team for all the hard work they are doing 24/7. But far more important than this award, is the tangible result of their efforts: new direct routes, new airlines and increased frequencies.

“This does not only result in a larger choice of carriers and destinations for the Belgian traveller, but also in an extra added value for our economy that runs into hundreds of millions of euros and a direct and indirect employment of several thousands of jobs. “It is our guarantee for staying among the very best airports in the world, for airlines as well as passengers”.

Although failing to pick up an award, Budapest Airport’s head of route development, Patrick Bohl, admitted that he was “thrilled” with his gateway’s ‘highly commended’ ranking after experiencing a difficult year following the loss of Malév.

So far this year, Budapest Airport has welcomed seven new airlines and 13 new destinations have been added to the Hungarian capital’s route map.

Kam Jandu, Budapest Airport’s director of aviation, said: “For three consecutive years now, Budapest Airport has been rewarded for its outstanding marketing efforts, elevating us on to the agenda of many airlines who otherwise would not realise the opportunity which exists in the CEE region.

We are delighted with this commendation and thank the voting airlines for their recognition, we promise to keep up the good work.”

The World Routes Marketing Awards have grown and developed over the last 15 years and are unique within the industry because they are voted for exclusively by the airline network planning community from written submissions.

This year’s awards ceremony took place at the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix racing circuit, during the 18th World Route Development Forum.

19.08.2014 / Launching of a new regular flight from Helsinki to Kazan

This morning, 19.08.2014, there was one of the most significant events in the life of the international airport "Kazan". At 3 hours 25 minutes «Finnair» Embraer 190 has arrived, which from today will start operating regular flights from Kazan to Helsinki.

Finnair Commercial Director Allister Paterson has arrived from Helsinki together with the passengers. They were met by the Minister of Transport and Roads of the Republic of Tatarstan Lenar Safin, CEO of the airport "Kazan" Aleksey Starostin, Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan Tourism Sergei Ivanov, Ambassador of Finland to Russia Hannu Himanen, as well as media representatives.

Passengers of the first flight were welcomed in the festively decorated Business lounge at Terminal 1A. Guests could enjoy the spectacular moment: water arch, arranged specifically for the aircraft. This is a traditional ceremonial welcome with a wish of successful flights. After landing, the official opening ceremony of the flight and the press conference were held.

At the beginning of the presentation the word was given to the Minister of Transport and Roads of the Republic of Tatarstan Lenar Safin: "With Finland we have very close and long-standing ties and friendship, and economic. We had long planning to open this route, and now it's happened - we launched a scheduled service on an ongoing basis, which will bind our nations. Especially because our Tatars diaspora live in Finland, so it's very nice. We opened this direction, and I hope it will be convenient for our passengers and serve as an impetus for the development of further economic and socio-cultural relations between Finland and Tatarstan. Welcome, Tervetuloa! ».

In his welcoming speech, the general director of the international airport "Kazan" Aleksey Starostin said: "Thanks to the President, the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, with the direct participation of the Ministry of Transport and Road Management we got multi-airport complex with huge potential. And the passengers of our country got more opportunities to make the direct and transit flights. Arrival time is chosen so that arriving in Helsinki in the early morning, the residents of our country do not lose a day, which is convenient for those who go as business travelers as well as for those who follow in another destination through the airport in Helsinki. "

Regular flights from the international airport "Kazan" to the capital of Finland will be carried out three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flight time is 2 hours and 40 minutes. Helsinki Airport - this is a great and convenient hub for dispersal, as throughout Europe, and in the area of America, and Southeast Asia. Yet it is convenient that all terminals are under the same roof, and the minimum connecting time for flights to Europe is just 35 minutes.

As stated at the presentation commercial director of «Finnair» Allister Paterson: "We are pleased that Russia now has the largest number of destinations from all the countries in which our airline flying - this is the sixth direction. Our morning flight allows citizens of Kazan arrive very early in Helsinki and until 9 am we are able to deliver passengers in major European cities such as Paris or London. I was lucky to be here last year as a tourist during the Universiade, and I hope for a great number of tourists from Finland and Europe to Kazan. Flights are preceded by long-term work of many people of the airline, for us it is really an important significant day. Therefore, we thank all the authorities, the airport for the assistance and support provided during the preparation of this flight. "

Looks like a promising international gateway for that part of Russia... a few questions:

- how long will be its runway be?
- how many gates will it have, and will those gates be used by both domestic and international carriers (if not have a segregated international and domestic sections)?
- what will be its maximum capacity, passenger- and aircraft movements-wise?
