Investors can't afford something like this in Spain which suffers under a deep crisis, unfortunately.
Except they get some money from the EU pot.

"There should be no concern about this company's ability to have the financing and the money. We have it," said Adelson's number two, Michael Leven, as he announced that the company had chosen a site in the dormitory town of Alcorcón.

He said Las Vegas Sands would find $3.6bn from its own resources and had banks lined up to lend the rest. Sources close to the company said it was too early to sign agreements with the banks, as a public tender process by the Madrid regional government had to be carried out first

Details in Las Vegas Sands 'EuroVegas' project unveiled

By HAROLD HECKLE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Posted: Feb. 8, 2013 | 4:41 p.m.

MADRID - A multibillion-dollar "EuroVegas" casino resort will be built in the outskirts of Madrid, hopefully bringing much-needed jobs and investment, officials from Spain and Las Vegas Sands casinos said Friday.

Madrid's regional government president, Ignacio Gonzalez, said EuroVegas will occupy an area equivalent to 750 football fields in the suburb city of Alcorcon and the first phase of construction will begin late this year.

Building the entire complex just south of Madrid is likely to take up to 18 years and it is estimated that some 260,000 jobs could be created. The mastermind behind the project is 79-year-old Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson.

The figures linked to the plans presented at Madrid's town hall are dizzying, especially for a country with a swollen deficit and unemployment at a staggering 26 percent. Some (euro) 22 billion ($29.5 billion) will be invested to build 12 hotels, six casinos, a convention center, three golf courses, theaters, shopping malls, bars and restaurants.

Las Vegas Sands operates casinos and entertainment complexes in several locations around the world, including Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore. Michael Leven, Las Vegas Sands CEO, said the group will cover 35 percent of the equity investment and assured Madrid authorities that funding to complete the rest of the project would be found. It was not clear where the remaining 65 percent will come from. Leven said Spanish banks would be among the investors, but he did not reveal which.

[...]
$30 billion investment in Spain, nice.

Gorgeous! I'm living in Madrid now and there's definitely a dearth of highrise architecture. Other than the Cuatro Torres CBD, there's really nothing else for skyscraper fans

I guess you have never heard of Sands? It's not some shepherds who are behind this project. It's a huge company with a proven track record in megaprojects.

Yes, Sands has the two biggest casinos in the world, The Palazzo and The Venetian Macao.

Yes, thanks, but would the EU cancel Eurovegas the investors would immediately give up the supertall.

Let's hope this won't happen. This would be Europes first Supertall outside Russia and the UK.

Maybe I misunderstood but in the TV I can remember I heard that some percents are financed by the EU pot.

(Whole casino project)

Correct me if I am wrong.

How is the EU going to finance a casino?

Some people think that the situation in Spain is like in Walking Dead or something like that... and some others think that our only source of investment is the EU...

But the fact is that Madrid is among the richest regions of Europe so it doesn't receive EU funds for almost anything.

And the fact number 2 is that this is a private investment from a foreign company. They said that they already have the money. Madrid's government said that they will help them, of course... not with cash but tax incentives...

And fact number 3 is that this is the best moment for investments like this because out of a crisis cycle this would have been much expensiver and the government wouldn't have agree that amount of incentives.

The M hotel promises to be quite iconic, I like it very much...as far as I know, if the usual procedure was respected the whole project would be taking a very long time to get launched but the political lobbying (excited about that huge/miraculous financial investment) would be willing to speed things up to make it happen...not sure whether it's doing Spain a favor or not, only time will tell...

I agree. At least it's pretty far from the city center. Would rather have seen it really in the middle of nowhere though. It might just attract the wrong kind of people.
