North Spain: Bilbao, Donostia, Pamplona, Logroño...

Bilbao is the capital city of Bizkaia, one of the 3 provinces of the Basque Country (also known as Euskadi, in basque)). 350.000 inhabitants, and a metropolitan area of 900.000, the Greater Bilbao. A modern city reinvented after an industrial depression in the 70's and 80's, and the city of the Guggenheim museum.

1st part, a walk along Nervión river.

Arriaga theatre, 1890.

1902 modernist old train station.

Ribera market, 1928.

Isozaki towers and Zubizuri bridge.

Towers by japanese architect Arata Isozaki.

Zubizuri, the most spectacular bridge over Bilbao river. Its name means "white bridge" in euskera, and it was made by Santiago Calatrava in 1997.

The Isozaki Atea, 82 metres each one.

We're really close to Guggenheim museum...

One of Bilbao icones, "Mama", a 10 metres spider made by a french sculptor.

Biblbao has its own unique old architecture and it's impressive. The Guggenheim, the Calatrava and those two sleek towers blend well like accents which bring the city up to a higher level.
A quick question: is Bizkaia the same as Vizcaya?

Yes, Vizcaya is in castilian, and Bizkaia in basque-euskera (in euskera the v and the y don't exist).

The Guggenheim museum and the Salve bridge. It's not just a great building, made by Frank Gehry in 1997, it really was a change in Bilbao, it supposed the revitalization of a depressed post-industrial city. In fact, it is known as "Guggenheim effect", a cultural project leading a complete city regeneration.

The museum and the Iberdrola tower, the new tallest skyscraper of the city.

Another icone of Bilbao, Puppy! This big dog (12 metres tall) made of flowers it belonged to a temporary exhibition, but the bilbainos (people from Bilbao) liked it so much, it remained. There is a joke that some people of Bilbao say the really important one is Puppy, and the Guggenheim museum is just his doghouse

Great job Buho. I've never been in this city but i can appreciate how Bilbao has been able to turn in a 21th city and change that old and awful industrial appearance. Bravo Bilbao!
