At over 200 floors a height of 900m is not unlikely

South Asian News Agency (SANA)

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): Pakistan’s plans to have world’s tallest building fizzled out on Friday after Abu Dhabi-based conglomerate denied having entered into any $45 billion investment treaty.

A few days ago the country’s biggest real estate group announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Abu Dhabi Group to develop mega real estate projects in Pakistan including construction of world’s tallest building in the port city of Karachi. The Pakistani group also announced that about 2.5 million Pakistanis will get jobs due to these projects.

All these claims proved hollow after Abu Dhabi group issued a clarification on Friday in major newspapers of the country, saying that it has not ‘undertaken or assumed any financial obligation or commitment to invest in this project and that there is no agreement to do so.’

“It is also unfortunate that discussions between the parties could not reach any conclusion and the memorandum of understanding has been cancelled,” the Abu Dhabi Group said.

Observers believe such false reports about investment accord could not only hurt local group’s reputation but also overall investment climate in the country.

The former owner of the Bahria Town Malik Riaz few days had informed the Pakistani media that he has signed a deal with Abu Dhabi based conglomerates and soon they will construct the tallest building of the world, adding that the problems of the Pakistanis regarding the accommodation would be resolved after the construction of this building. Riaz also had said that 2.5 million Pakistanis will get jobs in the result of the deal.

So, no. Not approved. Not going to be built. Probably just a PR stunt.

Bahria town will build it on their cost. So they need no Approval and there is not financial problem to this company, Country's tallest skyscraper is u.c by the same Bahria group in Karachi Pakistan which is 70 story and +300meters so They can make also it easily. Don't worry.

Time will tell whether this gets built or not, but it will take a long time, at least 10 years for this to get anywhere near T/O status. In the meantime, I think some other place like the Middle East, China or India will build something of a similar height.

^ At least for this decade, yes. But as China gets richer and more mature by the day, the construction of megatalls and 1km+ towers will significantly slow down after 2020. China will be a different place by then (at least I hope so), with most of its insecurities and inferiority complexes being wiped off.
If you are a strong, self confident country you don't need trophy towers anymore.

I dont know why someone opened this thread here...with no renders, no sitemap, and no concrete proof. This is a not even a proposed project...may be someone's wish at best.

Time to lock this thread

Bahria Town, US group sign major investment deal

Bahria Town on Monday signed a $20 billion investment deal with Thomas Kramer.

Islamabad (Breaking News / Monday, March 11, 2013) – Pakistan’s largest real estate developers and investors Bahria Town and a US investment group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) over a number of projects including development of safe city island and construction of world’s tallest building in Karachi.

Bahria Town in collaboration with the foreign companies would construct the world’s tallest building and Bodha Islanad City some 3.5-kilometres off the Karachi shore.

Bodha City Island, which covers 12,000 acres of land, will be developed within five years and it would be linked with Karachi through a six-lane bridge.

A spokesman for Bahria Town said that project would create 2.5 million jobs, whereas, the island will have 125,000 houses.

About Thomas Kramer?

Thomas Kramer born in April 27, 1957. He is a German born real estate developer and venture capitalist, and television personality. He is also noteworthy for his part in the redevelopment of South Beach, Miami, Florida. Thomas Kramer is also a well known high society figure and philanthropist, hosting charitable events at his Star Island (Miami Beach) mansion.

China does not build trophy towers, as they are very confident in themselves now. They are not building 1km+ towers like you claimed. They are building towers based on actual needs.

Then why do they have so many "ghost towers" and "ghost towns" then?

I don't know if you are serious or not. Of course China builds trophy towers, hell even Gary Barnett's 500m tall residential tower in New York could be called a trohpy tower, but at least there's a demand for that ("billionaires club"). Also, it's constructed in an urban fabric.

If you know economics, you would understand that building megatalls doesn't make any sense economically. It's more profitable to build several smaller towers than a huge one. So no, there's no need for such hypertall towers.

And don't tell me there's no space, so China has to build 500m+, and 600m+ towers as if there were no tomorrow. Just take a look at the many threads here on SSC, you won't find a single supertall / megatall in China which is being built in a (super) dense area. On the contrary actually - most of them are located in a sparsely populated area and / or in a park-like environment.

And about China's confindence: the country certainly still has its insecurities. How else would you explain the latest nationalistic outbursts? A confident country doesn't provoke its immediate neighbours and makes unrealistic claims. Or that a vast crowd of Chinese think they are superior and show excessive racist behaviour? But this is another topic, so I leave it that.

And before you judge, let me tell you I'm from Hong Kong and from Chinese (Han) descent.

/Rant over.
