Route

The M4 will begin at the termination of the M3 at the Sargodha Road Interchange on the northern outskirts of Faisalabad. It will continue on a southwest course connecting the cities of Faisalabad, Jhang, Gojra, Toba Tek Singh, Shorkot, Khanewal and Multan. Once at Khanewal, it will merge onto the N5 temporarily until the M5 is complete.
The M4 will have four sections: (i) Faisalabad-Gojra (58 km), (ii) Gojra-Shorkot (62 km), (iii) Shorkot-Din Pur-Khanewal (64 km) and (iv) Khanewal-Multan (45 km), whereas two large bridges will be constructed on the River Ravi and Shadhnai Channel.
[edit]History

Construction began on 19 August 2009 with the ground-breaking ceremony performed by Pakistan's Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani. Construction is expected to take three years to complete. The M4 will be constructed in four stages: (i) Faisalabad-Gojra (58 km), (ii) Gojra-Shorkot (62 km), (iii) Shorkot-Din Pur-Khanewal (64 km) and (iv) Khanewal-Multan (45 km), whereas two large bridges will be constructed on the River Ravi and Shadhnai Channel. Estimated cost is USD 601 million.

I think thanks to Peer-o-Murshid they are also constructing last section M-4 extension in Phase-I so no need to merge into N-5 you can see in satellite imagery that ground work started in 2011

Unfortunately, being able to drive from Karachi to Lahore on a motorway is still a distant dream.

total progress in 5 years on M-4 can be visualized by the fact that
The work started on only 1 out of 4 sections of M-4 i.e. Fsd - Gojra section. and even on that section, only one fourth work have been completed in these 5 years.

Arbab reviews progress on M-4 project

June 14, 2012 Brecorder
Federal Minister for Communications Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan has urged the NHA officials to utilise all possible resources to ensure timely completion of Faisalabad-Multan Motorway (M-4). He asked the officials to maintain active co-ordination with the Chinese and Turkish firms that are carrying out construction work so that the project could be completed timely.

He expressed these views while presiding over a high-level meeting convened to review progress on the project here on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Communications Mir Dost Muhammad Mazari, Federal Secretary Communications Anwar Ahmad Khan, Parliamentary Secretary Communications Chaudhry Saeed Iqbal and other high officials.

Chairman NHA Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi while briefing the meeting said that Faisalabad-Gojra Section of the Motorway was entrusted to China International Water and Electric Corporation. The construction work took off on February 25, 2010 and would be completed by December 31, 2013.

He elaborated that the project's Khanewal-Multan Section was being completed with the aid of Islamic Development Bank and work on the section started on December 2011 and the project had been awarded to a joint venture of a Turkish and a Pakistani firm. The Chairman said that tenders for Gojra-Shorkot Section would be floated soon. He said that 241-km long Faisalabad-Multan Motorway (M-4) would have 16 interchanges, two large bridges and 23 flyovers.-PR

Proving the need to build a lot more real cricket pitches for kids to play on. And I'm not kidding!

M4 Faisalabad – Multan Motorway
January 21, 2013

19 August 2009 was the day when ground breaking ceremony of M4 Faisalabad-Multan Motorway took place by the hands of the then Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani. Initial planned cost of M4 was 42 Billion PKR. The project was separated in four sections:

1.Faisalabad-Gojra (58 km)
2.Gojra-Shorkot (62 km)
3.Shorkot-Din Pur-Khanewal (64 km)
4.Khanewal-Multan (45 km) – (later included Muzaffargarh thus making it 57 km long)
Moreover fifteen interchanges and 23 flyovers/underpasses are part of the project. Two major bridges on Ravi river and Sidhnai canal will also be built.

According to initial planning, the whole project was to be completed in three years. It means M4 should have been completed in August 2012 or at least December 2012. Construction work started on Faisalabad – Gojra section with the ground breaking ceremony on 19th August 2009 while ground break ceremony while ground breaking ceremony for Khanewal – Multan section took place on 1st October 2011. According to newspapers and updates, land acquisition of Gojra – Shorkot was completed but of Shorkot – Khanewal was in progress. Originally the project was to be completed in end of 2012 but it is rescheduled to be completed in the end of 2013. But from the pace of construction work, it seems that project may be completed in 2015.

In comparison to projects initiated by Punjab Government in various cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and other cities of Punjab, this project initiated by Pakistan People’s Party is going on very slow pace. But even then, questions are raised over the construction work by Pakistan Muslim League. M4 when completed will ease the major load from the economic lifeline of Pakistan N5 National Highway and will also cut short the distance between Multan – Twin cities (Islamabad - Federal Capital, Rawalpindi) thus distance from Karachi to Federal Capital will also be decreased.

We can only pray that Pakistan People’s Party fulfill its promise with the people of Southern Punjab by timely completion of this project.

I don't think this has been posted before. It's a video of some children playing on the motorway and you can see construction going on.Well, you can see that it has a lot of lanes and it's gonna look like M2, which is the best motorway so far in my opinion in terms of hotness.
