Question” What do you guys feel about Building Information Models (BIM.) It has been said to be the future of construction. Do any of you guys have any experience with it, how do you feel about it?

So, to brief: Currently, many firms have been using AutoCAD to draw all of their construction documents. They would use spread sheets, independent from CAD programs, to work out their door schedules and do cost estimations. In short, graphics we draw on CAD are lines and are representational of something ie: air barrier.

However, BIM uses ‘smart objects,’ that is to say they each line need being defined: either a wall, insulation, barriers, structural elements, HVAC elements etc… Also, BIM are 3D models, and it produces automatically accurate elevations, plan, sections, detail…

So, I am trying to see how effective BIMs are, and I would appreciate anyone who worked on BIM to let me know if it was worth their time, and what they thought of it.

My objective is to learn about BIM, more specifically in the context of using it as a researcher in Building Science and know if it would be worthwhile using BIM instead of AutoCAD and sketch-up for building modeling!
