To było jedno z najbardziej wstydliwych miejsc miasta, wreszcie będzie godne stolicy.

Why do all skysrapers in smaller cities have to be built in such a terrible areas?

I would say that this is the best location for "skyscrapers" in the city. You need to take notice the wider area. This zone is zone for downtown where all city high-rises are and going to be placed... well not all of them, there are other areas where can be seen smaller clusters, but this is the main downtown. Unfortunately, the current state is not the best, but we hope, that it will be getting better

the whole area is here

Exactly, if any location is suitable, then its that one. Until the 1950s it used to be the main industrial area, industry was slowly moved out of this area as Bratislava expanded from the 1960s. Now it is defacto at the edge of the city center, located between the historic center and the residential area of Ruzinov. Plans to build the new city center here originated already in the 1970s during communism. That is why the new national theater was built here.

Currently many new highrises are planned, especially Twin City and Culenova(design by Zaha Hadid). When exactly they will be built, no one knows. (Most probably 5-20 years development)

However it is true the area is in horrible shape, this was caused by 2 reasons:
1. Most historic factories were destroyed in the construction craze before the financial crisis, however none of the planned projects have been built. Panorama City is the first example of a revival.
2. Poor planning and maintenance of the city council, which was not capable of protecting the area or even forcing the owners to develop it slowly.

It starts to be massive and it's still only a base. However, the core starts rising. Construction is quite visible on this webcam.
