NEW YORK | Hudson Yards Culture Shed | Pro

Diller Scofidio + Renfro Designs Telescopic ‘Culture Shed’ for New York

The expandable multi-use cultural venue dubbed ‘Culture Shed’ is one of the most radical proposals to come out of New York’s Hudson Yards Development Project. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro - the New York-based interdisciplinary practice that played a major role in designing the High Line - in collaboration with the Rockwell Group, this 170,000 square foot cultural center will be located at the south end of the Hudson Yards, with the main entrance located near the conclusion of the High Line at West 30th Street.

City courting community approval of Culture Shed at Related’s Hudson Yards

Quote:
City officials are trying to stir up interest in the Culture Shed, a massive exhibition and event space in Related Cos. Hudson Yards development, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Officials have taken a series of steps in recent months to get the project on its feet and attract community support. They revealed designs showing a transparent 125-foot-tall shell that runs around the building and would roll out to surround an 18,000-square-foot plaza adjacent to the High Line. They have secured tax-exempt status for a nonprofit group that would operate the space and have assembled a board of directors, whose three members include one current and one former member of the Bloomberg administration.

The proposal has also received the endorsement of cultural stalwarts such as the directors of the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. The board is still to estimate the cost of construction, however, and no hiring or fundraising has yet begun. The delay in appraising the cost of the project, Ryan Max, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs, told the Journal, was because of difficulty in estimating the cost of the high-tech material on the shell that “has not been used very much on projects in the United States.”

“The idea here is to see a space that serves the broadest spectrum of the creative sector in New York City,” Kate Levin, the city’s commissioner for cultural affairs and a member of Culture Shed’s board, told the Journal. A project of this type, Levin added, was key to the the city’s capability to remain on the forefront of innovation.

Construction could start in the summer of 2014 and is slated to be finished at the end of 2017, Levin said. The shed must be built in tandem with the platform over the West Side rail yards and a 70-story residential tower which will connect to it.

Despite the city’s efforts, members of Manhattan’s Community Board 4 are skeptical. The board is expected to recommend on Wednesday that the City Planning Commission deny the city’s zoning application, unless the city can devise an alternative 20,000 square feet of public space at Hudson Yards.

The more features like this Culture shed this project will have the more popular place it will become with tourists and general public. And the more people the more business for everybody inside and outside this development. Just take a skating rink inside Rockefeller center and see how this little feature became a magnet for millions of people from all around the globe. Do something similar here and we will see another stunning place in NYC.

I hope so: that rendering is looking north from High LIne. Culture Shed is on the left.

The closest to completion Hudson Blvd Park street looks like the below. The curbs/white vans define where the street goes when #7 subway extension's entrance opens next year (June 2014).
The shot is looking south from 35th towards the West Side Yard/Hudson Yards & High Line. The subway entrance is wrapped in plywood on the right & the subway vent bldg/overbuild is off screen to the right:

Culture Shed foundations

I have no idea on how the Culture Shed construction will progress: is it dependent on the platform contruction or not?

But the mid-ground of the 10/1/2013 photo shows the foundations of the Culture Shed & plaza between the Shed & the Coach Tower. The fore ground is where the foundations for D Tower would go. Right now that area is divided (by the razor wire topped fence) between two different construction projects. Photo is looking east from the 11th Ave viaduct, Phase 3 of the High Line Park is on right. Erection of platform steel will probably start around the low white building in photo left in 2H2014.

All the renders I've seen still show it.
themodulorman photo below shows the ~current state of the base of the Culture Shed. Photo is looking west with the "High Line at the Rail Yards" on the left

And here's a more recent Ben Fischer overhead (looking west from 10 Hudson Yards) for an overview:

8.20.2014

Ben Fischer "The planned extension of the High Line walking path wends around the western and southern edges of the Hudson Yards project. You'll be able to walk directly from the High Line path to the new "ground level" of the development."
