Romania's Tarom to switch to an all-Airbus operation?

Quote:
Tarom (RO, Bucharest Otopeni) could switch from a mixed-fleet operator to an all-Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) operator following sales pitches from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) and the European manufacturer concerning its fleet renewal plans.

Quoting sources close to the negotiations, Romania's inCont news site says as part of the deal, Airbus will buy back Tarom's existing fleet of four A318-100s, two A310-300s, four B737-300s, and four B737-700s with its sole B737-800 to be returned to its lessor.

In return, Airbus will arrange the requisite financing and, once all details are finalized, will this year begin re-equipping the Romanian national carrier with eight A319-100s, four A320-200s, two A321-200s, and two A330s.

As an interim measure, Airbus will lease Tarom a fleet of jets, no older than 5 years of age, while its actual aircraft are undergoing assembly.

The actual agreement, which is still subject to finalization between the airline's board and the Romanian Ministry of Transport, has taken on a degree of urgency given the growth of budget carriers such as Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) and Blue Air (Romania) (0B, Bucharest Otopeni) in the region as well as Air Serbia (JU, Belgrade) in the full-service sector.

According to inCont there are also plans to replace Tarom's fleet of seven ATR42-500s and two ATR72-500s will also be replaced with -600 variants of both types.

Well, those A318s should be retained as it is a unique operator, and not a lot of carriers operate that aircraft type in Europe (Air France is the other carrier I know of that operates the A318 as well). As for its long-haul fleet, two A330s may be good to start, for as long as Airbus will help out in reshaping TAROM's fleet for its future intercontinental prospects... Will it be the A332 or A333, and has Airbus given TAROM an opportunity to buy the A330NEO too?

Unfortunately there aren't many informations. These are roumors, and not very new ones. For some time now there have been discussions of switching to either Boeing or Airbus. They even talked of being the european launch customer for Mitsubishi MRJ.
Honestly I don't know what will happen and if it will be in the near future because there is an internal struggle for power within TAROM.

Carpatair since its bankruptcy filing no longer operates any scheduled flights within Romanian territory (or anywhere else) as far as I know and is strictly an ACMI/wet-lease operator of Fokker jets.

TAROM itself isn't in a position to talk to anyone over its future - its majority shareholder, the Romanian gov't, can only do that. Last week the Romanian Minister of Transport resigned (amid suspicious circumstances) and Ponta himself (the Prime Minister) is in serious trouble on corruption charges.

Yes, I know, Robert. I'm from Bulgaria and I'm very familiar with Romanian politics... In the article it's written that Ponta himself is working over the deal of TAROM. Hope that someday we will see the company up again. I can say the same about our carrier...

Tarom eyes long-haul return

Romania's Tarom is planning to restart long-haul operations.

Quote:
"We are thinking of course about the Far East, because we are very well positioned for that," chief executive Christian Heinzmann told Flightglobal at the Association of European Airlines (AEA) summit in Antwerp. "China is a big market for us and eventually India because we are in the right direction."
Heinzmann insists on resuming long-haul, but unfortunately no decision has been taken yet regarding fleet renewal. Resuming long-haul with the ageing A310s is out of question.

The link between therminal 1, 2, 3 (which use the same building) and T4 is done via a external bus. So, if Tarom wants to use MAD as a connecting flight with UX, passengers have to take their luggage, go out T4, take a bus, go to terminals 1-2-3, check their luggage and board the UX flight. I've necer heard about any internal link for passengers or lugagge between the 2 groups of terminals (1-2-3 in one side, T4 and T4S in the other).
Sorry for answering to an old topic.

Tarom used to operate in T4-T4s until last year. When T4 was inaugurated, Tarom still had a CS agreement with Iberia, so they were allocated there. When around 2010 the agreement was signed with Air Europa, they decided to stay there, and they did until 2016.

I must also say that there is an airside bus connecting T1 (just before passport control) with T4s (also before control), but I have never used it so I cannot give my opinion.

For me, T4-T4s was very convenient for Tarom. The only bad part was that while in T1-2-3 baggage can be collected quite fast, baggage from T4s takes ages to arrive to T4, so departures but especially arrivals could be really time-consuming.

At least for the last years, ground operations for Tarom have been operated by Iberia Ground Services, even with the change to T1. Anyways, Tarom keeps some staff (really small) to supervise it and keep the office open in a very limited schedule. So handling was transferred to Iberia and not Groundforce (Air Europa).

I think they still have an interline agreement with Air Nostrum LAMSA (Iberia Regional) to connect Romania with many destinations around Spain. Anyways, Air Europa also connects with some Spanish and Portuguese destinations.

Boeing in Talks for $1.8 Billion 737 Max Sale to Blue Air
2017 M06 16 16:06 GMT+3
Quote:
Romanian carrier may order the planes as early as next week
Latest-generation 737 seen as highlight at Paris Air Show

Romania’s Blue Air is in talks to buy Boeing Co.’s 737 Max, the latest generation of the U.S. company’s biggest-selling model, with an announcement possible at the Paris Air Show next week, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Bucharest-based airline is considering purchasing at least 20 planes, worth $1.84 billion at list prices, and chose the Boeing narrow-body over Airbus SE’s competing A320neo, according to one of the people. The order could be for as many as 50 aircraft, though it’s unclear how many of those may be options. Blue Air and Boeing declined to comment.

The deal would roughly double Blue Air’s fleet, which consisted of 25 older-generation 737s as of the end of last year. The expansion would bolster the carrier’s competitiveness with the likes of Budapest-based Wizz Air, as well as with Europe’s biggest discounter Ryanair Holdings Plc and rival EasyJet Plc, which have all been adding routes in central Europe.

Boeing delivered its first 737 Max, a version equipped with a more fuel-efficient engine than the previous model, to an affiliate of Indonesia’s Lion Mentari Airlines PT in May. The model is expected to be a focal point of the Paris Air Show, where the Chicago-based manufacturer is likely to unveil the Max 10, its largest-ever 737.

Blue Air to compete with Wizz and Ryanair on the regional flights.

Blue Air to purchase six Boeing 737 MAX planes, lease other 12

Quote:
Blue Air, the largest Romanian air carrier with Romanian capital, announced plans to purchase six Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes at a cost of over USD 600 million and lease other 12 aircraft.

The announcement was made in Paris, at the Paris Air Show 2017, the biggest event of the industry.

Moreover, company representatives said they would lease other 12 planes, respectively six Boeing 737 MAX 8 and six 737-800 Next Generation from Air Lease Corporation.

“The orders will be concluded in the second semester of 2019,” Tudor Constantinescu, Blue Air commercial manager told Ziarul Financiar at the event. “We will purchase six Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and reserve the right to buy other two, under the same contractual terms,” Constantinescu explained.

The cost of the six planes stands at over USD 600 million and will be paid in leasing.

“The catalog prices for the six amount to USD 600 million. Right now we do not have any bank loan. The eight planes purchased will be paid by means of leasing. All we know is that the deposit was already paid from the company money,” Gheorghe Racaru, Blue Air general manager said.

Tarom launches tender for three long-haul planes

Quote:
State-owned airline Tarom has launched the acquisition procedure for three long-haul airplanes. In May, the transports minister, Razvan Cuc, announced that Tarom wants to acquire planes for flights to the US and China.

Tarom said that the tree long-haul airplanes need to have two engines, “sisterships”, to be from the current generations of airplanes with the lowest possible cost of fuel/flight and/or per seat. Each aircraft needs to have between 225-270 seats, in two or three classes.

Tarom doesn’t exclude the acquisition of second-hand planes. However, on the announcement it’s written that „it shouldn’t be older than 2012, with the lowest possible cost for maintenance and the shortest length of amortization of aircraft in technical maintenance”.

The aircrafts need to offer an autonomy of minimum 5,200 nautical miles, to have in-flight entertainment systems, Wi-fi, seats with leather cover and a resting area for staff. They also need to have a cargo room of bulk type and heating control.

The offers have to be submitted until August 31.

In May, the company leased for ten years two new aircrafts Boeing 737-800 NG.
