There was a small Christmas Market right in the shadows of the Schloss. To stand there amidst the lights, revelry, peace, and joy while viewing the near-full shape and scope of the Schloss looming overhead was like a time travel come true. It seems the project is moving along quickly (unlike the airport), and still wishing the area of the former Kaiser Wilhelm I memorial will be re-purposed for something other than the silly teeter totter being planned.

...killing Hirohito wouldn't solve anything.

War is always a horror, what makes it tragic it is when it is allowed to sever the connections between people and their heritage, their history, destroying both the tangible and intangible links with their past. Historic buildings are, in effect, living history, and thus to destroy a historic building of consequence is essentially killing what had been a living part of the past. The tragedy was not when the Stadtschloss or any other building was bombed- that was overshadowed by the human tragedy happening at the same time. It could have been repaired. The real tragedy- and this applies the world over- is when the ruins were razed or left to rot.

To rebuild, therefore, is essentially to reclaim one's heritage and history as their own. Which is a healthy thing for a society. For Germans to reject much of their history, as many have, as being tainted by Nazism or the elements on which Nazism relied- nationalism, militarism, and so forth, dislocates them and deprives them of what is probably a society's most valuable asset.

Germany's history, in effect, is being reclaimed from Nazism and its long shadow- the Stadtschloss is no longer a symbol of "Prussian militarism" that is to be reviled but a part of a shared past that is to be celebrated.

The really terrible thing, then, is not so much the fact that war occurred but that in the winning and losing countries alike- not just Germany- it led to people across the world losing touch with the past. There will always be a future, yes, but history is, well, history. Celebrate the good, learn from the bad, but don't forget it. The Humboldt-forum may not quite be living history- at least not yet- but it is at least a reminder.

Okay, that's not what I was planning to say. I was trying to talk about more than just Hirohito and it all got very sociological very quickly.

Hey guys - this thread is about the amazing rebuilding of a Berlin landmark not about a debate on political issues. Please respect this.

We do that from time to time, but generally, this thread here is thought for references/redirects to major updates and news. To keep the Classic forum community posted, but also cater to a broader audience at the general construction forum. I think this can and should be done for major reconstruction projects like the Berlin Palace.

One of the original facades of the Schloss is mounted on a modern building right behind.

Are there plans to disassemble this and use on the Schloss?

That is Portal IV.

It faced the Lustgarten.

No, it is going to stay, where it is and a new copy will be made for the City Palace. They already measured the original to the fraction of a millimeter with the newest camera technology. Only 1/5 of the portal are original anyway...

No. First, as Tiaren already said, it`s a copy itself. Second, Some people did`t liked the idea of removing everything of the DDR history. In my mind, there is still enough. But this building doesn't look bad. Third, that building has seen history itself. It is also nice inside. Artworks from the 50`s. It was used as Germany's white house for chancellor Schroeder between 1998 and 2002. Back then, the government was moving from the capital of Bonn to Berlin.
And fourth, what would go on it`s place?

Ludi captured some nice impressions of that "Staatsrat" building's interior for the forum
(today: used as the European School of Management and Technology Berlin):
