Madinah does not require a new identity, says governor

* Madinah *

By MD HUMAIDAN | ARAB NEWS

Published: Jul 12, 2011 00:15 Updated: Jul 12, 2011 00:15

MADINAH: Madinah Gov. Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed has said the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah do not require any identity other than their religious status.

“Since Makkah and Madinah are indelibly marked with principles of monotheism and Islamic faith, the two cities do not need to look for another identity as many other cities in the world do,” Prince Abdul Aziz said on Monday while addressing a press conference at his palace after Madinah was declared the Islamic cultural capital of 2013.

Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja was also present.

“The cultural, historical, social and economic features of Madinah qualify the ancient city for becoming the cultural capital of Islam besides making it a symbol of the unity of Muslims around the world,” the prince added.

Madinah has remained a symbol of Islamic culture for centuries as it was the center from where the religion of Islam spread to all corners of the world. Millions of Muslims flock to the city to pay respects to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the prince said.

“It was a great honor to the Kingdom that both cities have been designated as cultural capitals of Islam over a period of 10 years. Makkah was named as the cultural capital of 2003 and the turn of Madinah comes in 2013,” the prince added.

The prince said the Kingdom would continue carrying the true message of Islam and would never cease to fight extremism.

On a question about opening up historical locations to visitors, the prince said some academic departments were entrusted with the task of preparing information about historical and archaeological locations and their task would be completed in 2013.

“Studies are under way to establish an academy to train the guides with knowledge in religious regulations and Islamic history so that they acquire skills in guiding visitors to historical locations, while taking care not to violate religious laws,” the prince said.

However, he added that all issues related to Islam’s historical locations would first be submitted in a study to the Council of Senior Religious Scholars.

He said a number of committees would be appointed to design the logo of the event and programs will be prepared with the collective participation of society.

He said the Madinah Literary Club will have a considerable role in the event. “The occasion will not be monopolized by the people of Madinah or the Kingdom, but the help of researchers in the Islamic world will be sought and each Muslim country will participate in a number of programs,” he said.

Assistant Director General of the Center for Madinah Studies and Research Abdul Basit Badran said the studies made about the heritage of Madinah are insufficient. “There is a clear deficiency in research on Madinah. There are 400 sites of historical significance in Madinah identified by King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives and the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities,” he said.

Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah - Capital of Islamic culture 2013

Islamic Cultural Capitals

Every year a handful of cities across the Islamic world are chosen to be Islamic Cultural Capitals; cities which are emblematic of the best that contemporary and traditional Islamic culture has to offer.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO), based in Rabat, Morocco, has the ambitious plan of strengthening, promoting and consolidating cooperation between the member states, through education and scientific projects. One such project is the naming of three or four cities each year as Islamic Culture Capitals; one each in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It gives the cities an opportunity to develop their architectural and cultural assets, with the view of educating the people about the importance of history in their region.

The cities chosen for 2012 are: Najaf, Iraq; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Niamey, Niger.

In 2013 the cities are: Tripoli, Lebanon; Al-Madinah al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia; Ghazni, Afghanistan; Kano, Nigeria.

Celebrations to mark ''Madinah Culture Capital''
to begin on Jan. 20

Madinah, 25 Safar 1434/ 08 January 2013 (IINA) –

Madinah Governor Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Majed announced that the year-long celebrations to mark Madinah’s selection as the Islamic Culture Capital for the Arab region for 2013 will start on Jan. 20.

A host of activities and programs, including conferences, seminars, recreational activities and competitions, as well as wide variety of cultural programs and folk art shows highlighting the rich culture and civilization of Madinah city will be held as part of the celebrations, the governor said in a press conference held at his residence in Madinah on Sunday night.

A number of senior officials, including Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Abdulaziz Khoja, were present. Prince Abdul Aziz emphasized that the people of Madinah have an original and beautiful culture and heritage that would be showcased at the event. He noted that the celebrations coincide with the ongoing greatest ever expansion in the history of the Prophet’s Mosque, launched by King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, last year. “Prominent figures from all parts of the world will take part in the event. There will be wide varieties of cultural activities and programs and they are open to women,” he said.

The governor stressed that King Abdullah is very keen to establish a giant cultural library in Madinah to serve the people, especially intellectuals around the world. There would be an excellent model library with all the advanced facilities instead of many libraries, he said while referring to the earlier plan to establish a big Haram library.

Prince Abdul Aziz urged the people of Madinah to actively participate and contribute to make the celebrations a success. He also highlighted the role of new media, especially the social networking sites, in promoting the celebrations. He has suggested preparing guide maps to help the visitors and pilgrims know about the venues of the events, including King Fahd Garden, special tent near Quba Mosque and Sultana suburb, and historical places in the city.

Dr. Khoja said that the ministry has developed a comprehensive media plan to promote all activities and events throughout the year, including programs to be broadcast on radio, Saudi Channel One, Cultural Channel, and Ekhbariyah Channel, in addition to the participation of newspapers. Dr. Khoja praised the idea of holding a conference of archaeologists in Madinah, describing it as excellent. “There will be a conference for writers also,” he added. The Madinah Cultural and Literary Club will dedicate its annual forum to the celebrations. “About 18 prominent men and women researchers will present papers at the forum with a theme of “Landmarks of Madinah.”

The Rabat-based Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), an affiliate of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has chosen Madinah as the Islamic Culture Capital for the Arab region for 2013. Madinah has remained a symbol of Islamic culture for centuries. Madinah’s turn as the Culture Capital comes 10 years after the holy capital of Makkah was chosen as the Islamic Culture Capital in 2003.

Al Madinah Al Munawarrah

as Islamic Culture Capital of the Arab Region for 2013

Madinah (old picture)

Records indicate that Al Madinah Al Munawarrah, one of the world’s ancient cities, was built by the 5th generation of the descendants of Prophet Noah (PBUH) when they were looking for a home to settle in. During their search, they found a prairie surrounded by mountains, and decided to build a village there, and call it after their leader “Yathrib”.

Yathrib was unknown for long ages (future archaeological discoveries might tell us more about this period) until its name appeared in the Minaean, Assyrian and Greek inscriptions that date back to a score of centuries before the Hijra (the emigration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Al Madinah).

Those inscriptions and scriptures reveal that Yathrib was a station on the route between the Levant and Yemen, and that its people lived peacefully away from the bloody wars between the big kingdoms, under the sovereignty of the Hejaz kingdom, providing a safe place for caravans.

Also, Arab historical sources indicate that Yathrib later became home to individuals and tribes from the Arab Peninsula, Palestine and Yemen. They together with the Yathribis (people of Yathrib) formed a multiracial and a multi-religious society, and co-existed peacefully before a struggle for power was provoked by the despotic Jewish leader of the al-Fityawn of Banu Thaalaba who was later killed by Malik bin Ajlan of the Banu Khazraj. After killing al-Fityawn Jew leader, Malik bin Ajlan sought the help of his kin, the Ghassanids of the Levant and the Himyarite Kingdom in Yemen, to defeat the Jews.

Not long after that, strife between the two sisterly tribes Al Aws and Al Khazraj erupted. This strife, which was provoked by the Jews, caused intermittent wars over 6 decades, during which many lives were lost. The last of these wars was “Baath”, which took place 5 years before the Prophet’s journey from Mecca to Medina. When the wise people of the two tribes realized the expensive cost of the war they decided to call a halt to it and look for someone to bring about peace, justice and concord to Yathrib.

At that time, the Prophet (PBUH) was being distressed by the polytheists of Quraysh. During the time of pilgrimage, he would go to Minah to invite the delegations of tribes to enter Islam. In the 11th year of his prophethood, he met 6 pilgrims from Yathrib, and invited them to enter Islam. Not only did they accept his invitation, but they also reported it to their fellow Yathribis.

In the following year, he met 12 people from Yathrib, who pledged allegiance to him. A year later, he met 75 people, whom pledged allegiance to him and invited him and the other Muslims to emigrate to Yathrib.

Indeed, the Prophet’s hijrah (emigration) to Yathrib marked the beginning of a golden era in the holy city’s history. Following the emigration, the name of the city was changed, Islam was propagated in it, wars ended, and its people were called the Ansar (the Supporters). Though the city was a site for two major battles, “Uhud” and “Ahzab”, it soon evolved into a center for preaching the word of Allah and a destination for delegations from around the Arab Peninsula coming to it to give a pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (PBUH).

Over the ten years that the Prophet lived in the Madinah, the city was a center for political, cultural and religious radiance. The Prophet’s revealed message and teachings came to pass in the sayings and deeds of his companions whom he entrusted with transmitting his message; a mission they so ably accomplished, paving the way for renowned jurists to contribute through scholarly works to spreading the Prophet’s message all over the world. This has earned Al Madinah its status as the first capital of Islamic culture. After the death of the Prophet (PBUH), Al Madinah continued conducting its mission, and so it became the center of the Khilafh (the Caliphate rule) and the capital of the growing Islamic state. Al Madinah was also able to protect its integrity against the apostates, send preachers everywhere and implement the legacy of the Prophet in the daily life of its people and in their way of educating future generations, i.e. the “Tabi’in” (the Followers).

When the Umayyad took over authority in 40 A.H. Al Madinah was relieved from political burdens, and their people were able to devote their lives to the knowledge circles in the Prophet’s Mosque. Therefore, the collection of the Prophet’s Ahadith (sayings) gained momentum, and distinguished scholars who helped people lead their lives in an Islamic way emerged. Also, the city grew larger, palaces were built along Al Aqiq River, dams were constructed, farms were set up, and the first water supply network (Al Ayn Al Zarqaa or the Blue Spring) carrying underground water from Qubaa wells to the Prophet’s Mosque and its surrounding neighborhoods was established. Likewise, the Prophet’s Mosque was rebuilt and expanded, and riches grew. And except the war of Harrah in 63 A.H., in which many people of Al Madinah died, the city lived in peace.

When authority was taken over by the Abbasids in 132 A.H., the people of Al Madinah pledged allegiance to them, and until the end of the 2nd century of Hejira, life was relatively peaceful in Al Madinah, until two big events took place. The first was the murder and fleeing of some of its inhabitants from the Banu Umayya. The second event was the rebellion of Muhammad al Nafs Azzakiya against the Caliph Al Mansour in 145 A.H. Muhammad al Nafs Azzakiya and a group of his supporters were killed by the Abbasid army, which invaded the city and extinguished his rebellious movement. After that, the city restored its scientific and economic thrive. Among the scholars that were famous then was Imam Malik, whom people from different countries sought to acquire knowledge. During the 2nd decade of the 3rd century A.H., the city was still a destination for Muslims to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and meet renowned Muslim scholars. These visits were an occasion for some visitors to receive licenses for Quran recitation, and to preach and teach for some others.

The city remained introverted within the wall that was built around it in 263 A.H. to protect its people. The Abbasids and the Fatimiyeen made sure to get the allegiance of its people. They delivered sermons from the minbar of the Prophet’s Mosque, and would send them money and gifts. When the constructions extended the wall both from the south and the west, another wall was built at the expense of Sultan Noureedine Zinki. Also, Salah Eddine Al Ayoubi and his sons managed to retain the allegiance of the city to the Abbasids. After the downfall of the Abbasid state, the Husaynid Dynasty took over the city and gave their allegiance to the Mamluks in Egypt. The city often enjoyed autonomy, and the Sultans used to often send appointment or dismissing decrees, in line with the recommendations of the Husaynid Dynasty. The Mamluks intervened in the city only in case of turmoil.

During the Mamluk era science was greatly promoted. This contributed to the emergence of many scientists, scholars, men of letters, and historians who enriched the Arab library with important works, especially on the history of the city and on its public figures. Before the end of the Mamluks reign, the principality of Al Madinah was annexed to the principality of Makkah. This weakened the Husaynid princes who then became deputies of their cousins, the princes of Makkah.

When the Ottoman Sultan Selim I took over Egypt, the Prince of Makkah sent him the keys of the two holy cities as a sign of allegiance to him. This ushered in the beginning of the Ottoman rule of the two holy cities. The Ottomans took good care of the city, sent money to it, rebuilt its wall, and built a castle for the army they sent. In the beginning, they kept it attached to Makkah, but then they gradually gave it autonomy. As a result, its military missions were directly assigned by the Caliphate, and the Imam of the Prophet’s Mosque became the highest administrative position. Also, individual and group’s emigration into Al Madinah increased, and the society of Al Madinah became a mixture of the children of Muslim communities from Europe, Asia and Africa, especially during the last century of the Ottoman rule, which lasted more than four centuries (923-1337 A.H.). At that time, the city influenced everybody by its religious and social style, and intermarriages increased, which added to the diversity of the city. Also, several endowments, schools and libraries were built by prominent officials and lessons continued to be taught in the Prophet’s Mosque.

During the first quarter of the fourteenth century A.H., the city witnessed a great development, for it was provided with telegraph wires and railways, which Sultan Abdel Hamid II made sure to build, in order to facilitate the pilgrimage for the Muslims and to connect the different provinces of the State of Islam. Moreover, the population of the city tripled and trade expanded.

However, the eruption of WWI, and the involvement of the Ottoman administration, which was taken over by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) during that brutal war, harmed the city considerably. Furthermore, Sharif Hussein bin Ali, the Emir of Makkah, and his sons, led a vehement revolution against the Ottoman Empire. This led the Muslim world to divide into two camps. Fakhri Pasha, the Ottoman leader, heavily defended the city when it was surrounded by Sharif Hussein’s troops. He also urged people to flee the city, in anticipation of the brutal battle that was to come but which was not to be. He moreover displaced the people that didn’t leave the city willingly. Only few families remained in Al Madinah. Although the people of Al Madinah were warmly received by the people of the cities they emigrated into, they suffered a lot when the war escalated. As for the people who stayed in the city, they also suffered from the high cost of living, hunger and siege. After the downfall of the capital of the Caliphate by the Allies, some officers mounted a coup against Fakhri Pasha and turned the city to the Hashemites in 1337.

During the Hashemite rule, Al Madinah partially recovered and a large number of its indigenous people returned to it. However, the state’s limited resources and the conflicts between the short lived Hashemite Kingdom and Al Saud in Najd, made the city suffer. Then, the people of Al Madinah wrote to King Abdulaziz who was uniting the country. In response to their letter, he sent his son Muhammed to rule the city on 19 Jumada I, 1344, and take allegiance on behalf of his father. This ushered in a new era for the holy city, which became one of the Saudi provinces.

King Abdulaziz and his sons took great care of the administrative, cultural and architectural aspects of the city. Also, a special attention was devoted to the Prophet’s Mosque. King Abdulaziz ordered an expansion (the first Saudi expansion) which doubled the size of the Mosque, and all the kings that succeeded him ordered expansions either in the Mosque itself or in its courtyards. They also revamped its equipments and the services provided to the worshipers and visitors. The most recent of these improvements was the one ordered by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah when he commanded the shading of its courtyards, and an expansion of the Mosque and of its courtyards, which doubled its capacity and made it an architectural masterpiece that provides the best worshiping conditions.

Over the last seven decades of the Saudi rule, the city has seen major developments: its population has increased by 5 times, its size has grown larger, its lands have been reclaimed, new buildings have been erected, gardens have been created, and courtyards and roads have been built. Also, the houses surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque have been rebuilt in accordance with the international building standards to provide the best accommodation and shopping services to the city’s visitors. Likewise, education have been developed, and thousands of scholars, writers and media pundits, both male and female, have graduated from its institutes and universities and have contributed with their works to the activation of the cultural movement in the city, in particular, and in Saudi Arabia, in general. In addition to this, the city is now embarking on a new phase by building the Knowledge Economic City (KEC) which uses the modern architectural technologies in building model cities. Through this project, the city seeks to attract scientists, innovators, investors and renowned international universities, take a leading role in science, culture and economy and pursue the mission it began in its first golden era, i.e. the mission of spreading light, virtue and peace for all.

By holding the title of the “Islamic Culture Capital” this year, Al Madinah will seek to bring to the minds the seeds of that culture which were sowed in all Islamic countries, and to affirm that those seeds are still arable. This will revive the beautiful gardens of the centuries-long Islamic civilization, thus proving that the lights of Islamic culture, which sprang from the prophet’s city, are still glowing and illuminating mankind’s path towards virtue, good and beauty and guiding their steps towards success in their religious and mundane life.

Panel clarifies Madinah’s cultural logo

4 June 2012 - 14 Rajab 1433 H

MADINAH — The Higher Committee for the Selection of Madinah as the Islamic Cultural Capital chaired by Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Majed, Emir of Madinah, clarified Sunday that the event’s logo simply symbolizes the occasion and does not reflect any trends or interpretations beyond the declared objectives.

The clarification came in response to criticisms and comments circulated through local newspapers and Internet sites on the selection of the logo. The critics questioned the failure to include the green dome of the Prophet’s Mosque in the logo, which only has a minaret and the map of the Muslim world.

The statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency said the committee took note of the opinions and comments published in newspapers and websites as to why the green dome was left out from the logo.

“To make matters clear, the committee wishes to clarify that the logo was selected after a public contest under its supervision. The winner met the set conditions and fulfilled the requirements to reflect the grand occasion. The logo bears the historic architectural landmark in the form of the minaret of the Prophet’s Mosque. The map of the Muslim world represents Madinah’s stature among the believers,” said the statement.

Tomorrow .. Starting project Madinah Islamic capital
The capital of Islamic culture began in Mecca 2005
to reach a good in 2013

Google translation: Based Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture "ISESCO" since the start of approval in 2005 the idea of rotating Islamic cities that have the privilege of carrying the secretariat of the Islamic culture for a year, and will be distributed this pregnancy Cultural three destinations in the geography of Islamic, since it depends choose Islamic capital Asian Centre for Islamic Countries Asian outside the Arab, Asian and other African Muslim countries outside the United African Arab states, and a third Islamic capital of the Arab countries.

And only one of the capitals was an exception to this rule, as chosen Mecca in the first year of the idea of the cultural capitals of the Islamic to be the cultural capital of the entire Muslim world in their areas of the three in 2005, and now, after eight years comes the younger sister of Mecca to get so attention cultural, but participation two other of the two capitals, "Ghazni" in Afghanistan for the Asian region, "Cano" in Nigeria for the African region, while Medina was chosen to be the capital of Islamic culture in the Arab region in 2013.

Method of selecting Islamic cities to enjoy the privilege to be the capital of culture seemingly random, but professed by the organizers is that the set of criteria is attention to them before choosing the capital of Islamic culture, the most important to be cities that are chosen has been willing to carry the burden appropriate to have later Bgenaúmha many, and lead at the same time, the secretariat carrying Islamic culture within the Islamic and more importantly, to provide good cultural outputs to the outside world. Read short of the names of the selected cities show that each passed unnoticed, and others tried to commemorate the occasion in the cultural memory to be a witness to it was not him, and days folds its leaves toward other cities and new capitals.

Aleppo far north Arabian was the capital of 2006, then Fez maximum Morocco those ceded to Tripoli in 2007, then Alexandria Valkiroan cities Zbhan in the White Sea and تحفظان Date conquerors first, Fteram City scientists in the southern Arabian Peninsula from the territory of Hadramout in Yemen, Vtelmusan city Algerian that you have done well by the way to make history of its own, and it didn who stand out of respect for the opportunity when Faatunha come right from honoring them can benefit.
