Great to see rejuvenated areas of Italian cities embracing large turfed swathes of land. This is not typical - normally they would be paved.

Well, squares (or paved areas) have an important meaning for the Italian architecture. Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Piazza Duomo in Milan, Piazza San Pietro in Rome, Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, Piazza San Marco in Venice... these are some of the thousands and thousands of squares that you can find around Italy.

The "piazza" is mainly a second home where, besides ages, genders, social classes, everybody is welcomed and feels comfortable. This "open air living room" allow people to speak aloud while, sitting on the ground, they enjoy to talk, think, read, or just look around.

What did and still make them unique in the Italian context is their history and their architecture, whose study allows to understand not only their urban function, but also their social and religious purposes which have been kept over time. There is a kaleidoscopic world, full of different values, behind a "simple" historical Italian piazza.

Yes, I agree. But how many grassed piazzas can you find in Italy in the center of a city. I can think of one other, which is in Padova - Prato della Valle.

The two levels square sits between Il Dritto, Lo Storto, Il Curvo and on a new metro station.
High street stores, restaurants and the main entrance to a fashion mall complete its character while connecting the new development with the surrounding city fabric.
