There is more information about this on skyscraperpage.com. In a city full of parking lots, they are demolishing this gem. Pathetic.

I agree that's a real shame. Is there no other suitable location for this tower nearby?

^ Except the "gem" doesn't look much like that and hasn't for many years. All of the deco detailing was removed long ago.

this one is in the prep stages... HAIF member Triton posted these yesterday:

this pic is from early January... note the removal of the art deco attributes, done sometimes in the 60's..

and from three days ago...

From March 5:

Hines breaks ground downtown

http://h-town-visually.blogspot.com/...texas-and.html

Quote:
Hines announced Wedensday that it has started construction on a 48-story office tower at the corner of Main and Texas in downtown Houston.

The project, 609 Main, is the first of several planned skyscrapers to break ground downtown. The building will have a little more than 1 million square feet of space when it’s completed in early 2017.

Hines Announces Construction Start for 48-Story Tower in Houston; One of the Largest Spec Projects in the World

Quote:
HOUSTON – Hines, the Houston-based international real estate firm, has announced the start of construction of a downtown Houston skyscraper, one of the largest “spec” office projects in the world.

The Hines project, 609 Main at Texas, will be a 48-story, 1,050,000-square-foot office tower at the corner of Main and Texas streets in Downtown Houston. Hines had been planning a smaller building, but the firm increased the size of the tower because demand for space in the building appears to be growing, says George Lancaster, senior vice president of corporate communications for Hines.

Without a pre-leased tenant, starting a “spec” or speculative project of this magnitude demonstrates a significant amount of confidence in the economy. But Houston’s energy business has been expanding and generating growth in other sectors for several years.

Houston, with 82,000 new jobs last year, led the nation in job growth and housing starts in 2013. The city just set another record for building permits.

Office occupancy is exceptionally high in Houston and rents are rising. The Energy Corridor in west Houston has and Class A occupancy rate of 99 percent.

Downtown occupancy rates are high in Houston office towers. The Houston CBD vacancy rate is 9.2 percent in overall and 7.5 percent in Class A, according to CBRE.

Hines said in a news release that construction is expected to take 36 months, with delivery scheduled for February 2017.

3 years isn't bad, they have to start building yet.

Early 2017, which is within reason. Also, there is an older tower (with black netting at left) that has to be demolished first:

Someone can soon move this to the construction forum as soon as the tower crane arrives.
