Peers have highest praise for Q1 tower

07Oct06

WHEN the Sunland Group set out to build Australia's tallest building, awards were not on its mind.

But the 80-level Q1 tower in Surfers Paradise has made its mark on the building industry, being named Queensland's top property development for 2006 by the Australian Property Institute.

Sunland Group managing director Sahba Abedian yesterday said Q1 had received 'a lot of recognition over the past couple of months' and he was chuffed that the listed Gold Coast company's signature development had been given this latest accolade.

"It is quite a striking building and the award recognises it as an iconic project for the city," he said.

"But, when we first set out to build Q1 we didn't set out to create a landmark."

In presenting the award in Brisbane on Thursday evening, API Queensland president Brett McAuliffe gave praise to Sunland's 'vision, commitment and sheer determination' in putting together the Q1 project.

"The property industry needs visionaries who can deliver and have the capability, nerve, and will, to see their vision through," he said.

The building's design, which was inspired by the Sydney Olympic torch, may be replicated in Dubai where Sunland is planning a sister project to the Q1 tower, to be known as D1.

But the competition for building awards in the opulent United Arab Emirates capital may be a bit stiffer.

Dubai gives a new meaning to the term high-rise with the Burj Dubai project set to soar to 800m on completion, making it the tallest building on earth.

Dubai also is home to some of the world's unique building designs, such as the landmark sailboat-like Burj al Arab hotel.

Plans for D1 have yet to be finalised, but Mr Abedian said that, while the project would take a similar form to Q1 it would be sympathetic to its Arab surroundings.

"Obviously it will be a different design and we will be adapting it to the local environment, taking account of the history and heritage of Dubai," he said Also recognised in the API Excellence in Property Awards this week was The Ecovillage at Currumbin.

The Ecovillage, a 144-home project being developed on a 110ha site on Currumbin Road, is being developed by Landmatters, a company linked to Chris Walton, Kerry Shepherd, and Colin Bear.

The project has taken out API honours as the State's best environmen-tal development, capping an award-filled year for the Ecovillage which received gongs at the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency's sustainable industries awards and also was given a double-gong by the Urban Dev-elopment Institute of Australia.

Chairman of the ADI judging panel in Queensland David Eades said there was 'a growing theme of environmental sustainability flowing through projects, reflecting an increasing responsibility by developers for our environment'

Good to see more news on this and let's hope it'll be a stunner.
The whole burj dubai area is a few miles down the road so this is pretty much a stand-alone tower, it won't be lost. It'll have to compete with the 4 seasons (which is also a stand-alone tower) across the creek though and that's definitely a stunner.

I really hope these get built though. They do seem really close to the airport and for comparrison, towers in the red area at the bottom had to be reduced because of that.

What are dubai's plans for the already terrible traffic? It takes like 45 minutes to go 15km.

Just seems like all the development is tossed out their with no strategy at all, yet everyone marvels about how they think it will be the greatest city in the world

well there is the 4 line $15 billion metro, 3 new bridges to cross the creek, a new interemirates superhighway, a new lane just complete on SZR taking it to 6 lanes each way, a new lane on the Emirates highway taking it to 5 lanes ech way ,rebuilding of about 4 massive interchanges(rashidiya, zubal rd etc) so all in all close to $20billion currently being spent on improving the road and transport network

malec, Canal Point is on the other side of Arabian Canal, but if you push that tall one more to the right, it could represent Almas Tower.

^ Very nice! Finally some taller towers in the middle of the Marina! I like the horizontal bands. Gives these towers a very "Chicago" feel, but with "Dubai" crowns.

The Al Burj doesn't look that tall on the pictures... :s
Have they finally given up the idea of making taller that BD ? Seems to be impossible from now...
