First 727 all lit up for the Boeing Centennial Celebration. Had a lot of fun and was honored to attend.

This picture is quite melancholic to me, to be honest, because it was taken 11 or 12 years ago in a flight between Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo in one of the last MD-11 flights operated by Varig, and I knew I would never fly in a MD-11 or any other AC operated by Varig, as they were in their last legs and their MD-11 were already scheduled to be returned to the leasing company. Shortly after the landing, the captain, almost in tears, thanked all the passengers for our support in flying with them even knowing the company was bankrupt. By that time, Varig had a code-share agreement with Tam, and most of the passengers were choosing to fly with Tam and their brand-new A320 instead of Varig. It was touching and added even more melancholy to the situation.

Varig was my favorite airline and the MD-11 is still my second favorite bird after the 747, so this trip was basically a "goodbye" to two of my favorite things related to aircrafts.

No, you're not. I have been noticed that a few months ago.
However, I think that the MD-11 is older plane than the Triple Seven. So it appears that the Boeing Design Team copied some or most part of design.
The interesting fact is that Boeing acquired McDonnell (Douglas) in 1995. Maybe the merger talks were conducted years earlier and as some temporarily oral agreement McDonnell allowed Boeing to copy its trijet (I read somewhere that the Triple Seven was initially designed as trijet).

Actually, Boeing bought MDD in 1997, two years after the 777 entered service, and the 777 developement started in the late 80's. More so, The 777 shares the nose section of the 767 which first flew in the early 80s. and while the MD-11 is basically an upgraded DC-10 (so a late 60/early 70s design) the 767 looks nothing like the DC-10.

So, I'd say the resemblance between them its just a coincidence.

There were some rumours about Boeing considering to remove the tail fin engine of the MD-11 and replace the 2 remaining engines with a more powerful ones, but they scrapped this idea as soon as they realized that this "new" MD-11 would be too similar to the Triple Seven to make sense.

Sorry to bother you guys with more of "nostalgic vibe", but a friend of mine sent me this video just because I was writing about the Varig's MD-11 on my Facebook page, but I think a video like this must be shared with more people that like the trijets
