Yeah, I am very surprised that KLM still operates the MD-11 on its AMS-SFO operation (I now live in the Bay Area), so it is a huge rarity that it is the only airline left operating the tri-engine jet on passenger operations. The airline, though, that made me recall of the aircraft is the former Swissair that operated MD-11s on its long-hauls between Zurich and points in Asia...

As with any aircraft type retiring, it may be hard to bid farewell to them, especially on passenger operations. But, it's great to see KLM getting better Airbus and Boeing aircraft for its long-haul needs. Hopefully, KLM will operate the final MD-11 flight between AMS and SFO, and I am hopeful that it will be replaced with a daily B77W or B772 service.

From the MD-11's glory days:

Here are some of the birth of MD-11s. The old MD-11 production line in all its glory.

Today at Long Beach, there are no large production facilities or any amazing aircraft being built. All that's left is a bit of old tarmac with grass growing over it.

The main assembly hall in Long Beach, where Boeing kept assembling the 717s until the end of the production is still standing. And earlier this month it was in the news that Mercedes will use the building to open a new factory in 2014.

http://www.presstelegram.com/general...-in-long-beach

The "Fly DC Jets" sign won't be removed from the building.

And Boeing Defence is still assembling the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III at the original McDonnell Douglas factory in Long Beach. This is a different building, at the other side of the airport then the buildings where the MD-11 was assembled.

The main building where they assembled the MD-11s has been demolished in the early 2000's though. All that is left there is a field of grass.

Not true.

The MD-11 assembly line was in building 84, which is still standing right next to building 80 with the Fly DC Jets sign.

What has been demolished are many of the buildings where the parts where fabricated. You can see it with the time line on Google Earth historical imaginary how the site developed from 1994 until now. All the building that are gone now were demolished in 2005.

It's always sunny in Southern California.

It does look like they did assemble some MD-11s outside, but there was also a assembly hall where most of the planes where put together. The tails had to be fitted outside on all planes though, that's pretty much what you see here in the pictures.

Here's a selection of my favorite MD-11 shots:

One of my all time favorite aircraft. Such a shame it's airline career is coming to a end.

It was a real possibility that the DC-10 would have outlasted the MD-11 in scheduled passenger services, but that's not going to happen now Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be retiring it's last DC-10s in December.

http://www.austrianwings.info/2013/1...enger-service/

After their retirement 1 of them will make 1 final commercial flight in March 2014 from Bangladesh via London to the USA where the plane will be added to a museum (probably in Seattle). At this event they will also be taking delivery of a new 777-300ER.

If KLM had followed all the other airlines with the retirement of their MD-11s this would have been the last widebody tri-jets still in active service.
