After their retirement 1 of them will make 1 final commercial flight in March 2014 from Bangladesh via London to the USA where the plane will be added to a museum (probably in Seattle). At this event they will also be taking delivery of a new 777-300ER.

If KLM had followed all the other airlines with the retirement of their MD-11s this would have been the last widebody tri-jets still in active service.
Via Manchester actually.

The very last scheduled passenger flight with KL is planned for 25th October 2014. For anyone interested the flight is KL692 from Toronto YYZ to AMS.

Here's a picture of the tail section taken by me, probably more than 7 years ago.

Then I suddenly spotted a Royal Dutch Airforce DC-10. Too bad I couldn't get a proper shot.

KLM PH-KCK Ingrid Bergman has been shipped to Victorville for scrapping.

With her demise, the total number of MD-11's in the KLM fleet will be reduced to 4 active, and 1 WFU (withdrawn from use) airframe. Adding the 2 World Air MD-11's this means that currently only 6 MD-11's worldwide remain in passenger service.

Anyone know why KLM is keeping these old aircraft in its fleet for so long compared to other airlines that got rid of the MD-11s and other old aircraft years ago? Is it that KLM is not profitable enough to replace aircraft or something?

It's mostly due to delays in the 787 delivery schedule as I understand it (although they did seem much happier with the MD-11 than just about everyone else). Not like Northwest/Delta keeping some of the DC-9s around until now, and the MD-80s probably till the end of the decade.
