KLM was already the latest operator of scheduled flights with the MD-11. As of today it remains the sole operator of the type, as World Airways who still operated 2 passenger MD-11s for predominantly military charters closed down immediately.

When KLM will retire their last MD-11s on 25 October 2014 it will be the end of 24 years of passenger service with this McDonnell Douglas Tri-Jet.

Cheap, large interior space and reliable, I suppose.

As always (yes, always) in air transport, its down to cost effectiveness.

Availability is also a big reason.

FedEx got a huge fleet of converted A300/A310s, DC-10s and MD-11s. They got them when all the passenger airlines were retiring these type of planes. They were cheap and it was very easy to buy up a large 2nd hand converted fleet in no time.

Recently they started to receive factory new 767s, which are now also cheap to buy since they are last of the line production slots until the new 767 tankers go into full production. With so many passenger 767 to be retired in the near future it gives FedEx also the opportunity to buy up many more 2nd hand converted ones.

It also helps that the average parcel is not that heavy, which limits the fuel expenses for this older planes.

That one made it's final flight on 30 March 2014 to the Aircraft boneyard at Phoenix Goodyear Airport in Arizona. Where the company AeroTurbine will scrap the plane for parts.



The number of cargo operators is also declining.

It's expected that Air France / KLM will decide this summer to stop their dedicated freight operations. This means that Martinair will shut down grounding another 6 MD-11s.

Most of these MD-11Fs will probably be picked up by UPS or FedEx, but that again means less diversity in the skies.
