Here we go, with the final flights of KLM's venerable MD-11...

It may be hard to believe that this image was taken a few weeks ago... and now, it has been sent off with a grand farewell.

The DC-10, along with the MD-11, to me are the best looking commercial airliners ever built. A very close second comes the 747-400. In absolute last place comes the A380...!

To any enthusiasts in the UK, I have the vehicle registration 'MD11 FLY' available for purchase. Currently on a DVLA Retention Certificate.

No, they are going to be scrapped at Victorville in California.

FedEx hasn't taken delivery of any new 2nd hand MD-11 in years now, the last was in 2011. UPS took delivery of their last one in 2008.

With so few MD-11 P remaining the last couple of years it became economically more interesting scrap them to sell the spare parts instead of converting them into freighters.

I love tri jets and have never had the opportunity to fly on one. What is the reason for why airline manufacturers have moved away from them? Are jets powerful enough to not need a 3rd top push the aircraft across the sky on long hauls?

That's correct, two current day, let's say 787 engines would be more then enough to power a MD-11.

But it was also because the ETOPS system of regulation that came into place from 1988. This system allowed twin engined planes to fly long distances over areas without any nearby airports. Before this it was thought that you needed 3 or 4 engines to fly these long distance routes, often over oceans safely. In case of engine failure there would still be more then 2 working engines left to fly the plane safely. Because the engines became more powerful and also more reliable this ETOPS system became possible as planes could still fly on for hours on just 1 engine to reach the nearest airport.

I see. What i shame. I really enjoy the look for the 3rd jet in the tail.

I was looking at the KLM MD 11 up above, doe the MD 11's doors open to the inside of the jet instead of outwards like todays Airbus and Boeing jets?
