This way it's more fuel efficient and more range is added.

So they sacrificed the STOL performance for economics...understandable, I guess.

Just in case you are wondering MAN has a great PUB at the end of the runway, it has been there for many many years and (as you have seen) allows spectators an amazing vantage point.

Principal differences between the An-74TK-300 airplane and being operated An-74TK-200 one are the following points: engines are mounted at the pylons under the wing...
The most important advantages that differ new aircraft from its predecessor An-74TK-200 are the following: flight speed is increased by 25-50 km/h; fuel consumption is reduced by 20%...
The above mentioned advantages essentially increase the competitive ability level of the An-74TK-300 aircraft and make it possible to expand its sales market.

This is just one of the aircraft modifications.

Russian Defense Ministry Mulls An-26 Cargo Plane Replacement
2
By RIA Novosti on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

The Russian Defense Ministry is considering two possible designs for a replacement for the obsolete Antonov An-26 military transport aircraft, a senior ministry official said on Monday.

The ministry is considering development of a light military transport plane based on the Antonov An-140 turboprop airliner made by Aviakor in Samara, or the rival Ilyushin Il-112V transport aircraft to be made by the Voronezh aircraft plant (VASO), Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said.

He offered no indication when a final choice will be made, only saying the ministry is currently comparing the planes’ specifications.

The An-26 is a twin-engined turboprop aircraft designed and produced in the USSR from 1969 to 1985.

The An-140-100 was developed by Russia’s Antonov design bureau as a replacement for the An-24 and An-26 series aircraft. It can carry up to six metric tons of cargo to a range of over 2,000 kilometers, and can be used for patrol, military transport and special-ops missions.

Now that looks a bit like the old BAe-146 regional jet aircraft from some time back. Only this time, it looks much more modern, efficient, and cleaner looking. Antonov could sure compete well with Sukhoi Aviation Company over time... Hopefully, the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer could create an aircraft that could match the SSJ-100 soon.

@fieldsofdreams

The main activity of Antonov company is the production of transport airplanes... but recently our company seeks to occupy the niche of regional passenger planes. We develop and manufacture the regional passenger jets of a new generation. Russian SSJ-100 is not our main competitor. Our major competitors are Embraer & Bombardier.

Ah I see. I brought in the SSJ-100 to the picture because the size between the AN-158 and SSJ-100 seem to be similar that both could carry a similar number of passengers per flight. But it's good that you brought up an important point that Antonov is entering the regional passenger jet market that you'll be competing with Embraer and Bombardier (and to a lesser extent, ATR, Mitsubishi, and CNAC of China) because the regional aircraft market is a fast-growing sector of the aviation industry that people traveling short distances between city centers and rural communities are becoming more savvy and demanding nowadays. It is all about bringing goods and people to the places they need to go to keep the markets flowing, and Antonov could catch up with the likes of Bombardier and Embraer over time, particularly in the Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and Asian markets... Question, though: will any of Antonov's aircraft be able to carry PTV and multiple seating options, and will the AN-158 carry First or Business Class seating?

It already does. No sense to install First Class, but all operating An-148/An-158 are configured with Business and Economy Class seating.
You can see it here:

Actually, An-148/An-158 is targeting unique niche - airports with bad runway surface. Due to it's engine and gear design it can land on any runway (grass, land and etc.), where other turbojets do no even dare to think about.

You made a point here, Antonov should fit the bill, although many see the future of aviation moving forward, companies modernizing their fleets, and so on, airports are at disadvantage when moving along together, small towns do not have the cash flow to do serious work on their regional airports, if Antonov is targeting these routes under any conditions, there's a niche no other big company is willing to cover.
