ANTONOV Company presents its modern programs at SITDEF 2015, one of the biggest exhibitions of Latin America that was open in Lima, Peru on May 14, 2015.

ANTONOV aircraft are well known in the region. In 1966 eight AN−24 passenger aircraft were delivered to Cuba. After that more than 240 AN−24 and AN−28 passenger aircraft, AN−26 and AN−32 transports, AN−2 light multipurpose biplanes were delivered to customers from Latin America. They achieved good reputation while reliably flying under difficult climatic conditions. ANTONOV Company provides aftersale support of these airplanes, working closely with aviation administrations and aviation companies. Besides, operators are suggested to perform various works on modernization and re−equipment of ANTONOV aircraft.

Basing on many years positive experience of ANTONOV aircraft operation in the countries of Latin America, today ANTONOV makes an accent on effective aircraft operation support. ANTONOV includes a serial plant, where aircraft that are continuing operation in the region were manufactured. This is an important factor to realize this activity.

Taking into account peculiarities of the Latin−American market, ANTONOV presents new transports to attention of the aircraft operators. One of them is the AN−132 light multipurpose turboprop transport, intended for carrying various cargoes weighting up to 9.2 t on short− and medium−haul routes. Besides, it will be able to perform aerial delivery of cargoes on parachute platforms and airdropping of paratroopers, to transport personnel as well as to be used under emergency situations to carry sick and injured persons. The AN−132 will inherit the best characteristics of its predecessor: operation in hot climate and in mountain terrains owing to high thrust−weight ratio, basing on all the airfields, reliability and flexibility to operation conditions. The AN−132 will have two−member crew “glass” cockpit, board systems and equipment meeting all the modern standards. In−built loading/unloading equipment and auxiliary power unit provide autonomous operation while basing at unprepared airfields.

The AN−178 transport jet having payload up to 18 t will be able to effectively work in conditions of the region. Nowadays this aircraft is undergoing a tests program. It is created according to demands of aviation operators drawing on the ANTONOV’s vast experience in operation of the worldwide famous AN−12 transport that the AN−178 is going to replace. Besides, the new aircraft is being considered to be a basic platform for creation of a range of modifications of civil and military destinations. Thus, its development is planned not only in direction of creation of functionally different variants and modifications, but also equipping it with units, systems and equipment of alternative suppliers. This let extend a potential aircraft market and maximally adapt it to specific customers’ requirements.

At the exhibition, ANTONOV also presents a family of the AN−148 and AN−158 regional jets. They proved their effectiveness while performing various tasks, including carrying passengers, sick and injured people during natural disasters, high−comfortable carrying of VIPs.

The AN−158 passenger aircraft successfully passed tests in highlands of Latin America. The tests were performed in airports of Latakunga, Ecuador (2800 m above the sea level), La Pas, Bolivia (4000 m above the sea level). At present, 5 such aircraft are operated in Cubana de Aviacion, Cuban airlines.

Taking part in SITDEF 2015, ANTONOV Company is intended to conduct negotiations with representatives of commercial aviation companies, ministries of defence of Latin America, and managers of aviation enterprises. These meetings may become a start point of new joint aviation projects between Ukraine and Latin America.

On May 7, 2015, within the events, dedicated to maiden flight of the AN−178 new transport, an agreement on purchase of aircraft and cooperation on joint serial production of the AN−178 in PRC was signed between ANTONOV Company and Beijing A−Star Science & Technology Company, a Chinese company.

Commenting upon the signed document, Mr. Wang Hongliang, Director General of Beijing A−Star Science & Technology Company, noted: “We think that the AN−178 is a very good aircraft and it has big perspectives at the Chinese market. We are going to purchase two aircraft, and then to organize production of the AN−178 in China”.

The AN−178 is suggested as a replacement of the AN−12, that was delivered to China earlier and modifications of which are still producing there. Comparing with its predecessor new ANTONOV transport will have a number of advantages. The first one is correspondence of the AN−178 to modern airworthiness requirements, and considering further aircraft development – to perspective requirements.

With km fuel consumption being almost equal with one of the AN−12, the AN−178 will have essentially higher productivity owing to cruising speed that is 35% higher. Besides, the new aircraft will be able to be operated at the altitudes of up to 12.2 km, while cruising speed of the AN−12 is limited by 8.5 km.

One more advantage of the AN−178 is existence of an airtight cargo compartment. This lets not only carry passengers in the fuselage without flight height limits, but also essentially increases a list of possible cargoes. Existence of an airtight compartment is especially important when using aircraft while carrying patients and injured in stretchers.

The AN−178 is equipped with a cargo ramp. Besides, landing rear is equipped with a kneeling system to reduce an angle of running upon a ramp.

In operation the AN−178 will be considerably cheaper than the AN−12. First of all, owing to existence of two engines instead of four ones. Laborious maintenance of propellers and their reducers is excepted. Besides, a flight crew of the AN−178 is twice less than that of the AN−12 – three crew members instead of six. Modern onboard equipment let essentially simplify and reduce operational costs, reduce diagnostics time of failures and decision making of its removal.

As its predecessor the AN−178 will be able to be operated autonomously, outside the main airports of basing, including poor equipped airfields with unpaved runways. Unlike the competitors, the AN−178 onboard transport equipment can optionally include upper handler that will let perform transportations without special equipment, for example in desert or tundra.

Commenting upon his choice Zaur Akhundov, President of Silk Way Airlines, noted: “This aircraft is universal. It is very attractive by technical characteristics. It is a very good replacement of the AN−12. We will actively use the AN−178 for cargoes transportation”.

The AN−178 new transport actively started to perform a program of certification tests. On May 7, 2015, it performed its maiden flight, on May 13 the aircraft spent 5 hours 20 minutes in the air, and on May 14 – 4 hours 20 minutes.

At present the ANTONOV test group is evaluating the aircraft aerodynamic characteristics, operation and functioning of the control system, power plant, auxiliary power unit, navigation and on−board equipment.

As test pilots note, the new aircraft feels itself comfortable in the air. Its control method is very close to piloting of the AN−148 and AN−158 aircraft that makes performance of the flight task essentially easier.

Guests familiarized themselves in details with the innovative technologies, applied in creation of ANTONOV aircraft, and also when providing them with after sale support. In particular, they also visited a wind tunnel, the enterprise’s assembly shops, strength tests laboratory, and saw flight simulators of ANTONOV aircraft.

Within the negotiations perspectives of development of cooperation between Ukraine and Canada in aviation sphere were discussed. A list of Canadian enterprises that could take part in joint production of the ANTONOV aircraft was considered.

An agreement on creation of Ukrainian−Canadian work group to determine certain directions of work and perspective projects on aircraft production, promotion and modernization at the levels of official and business circles was also reached.

Mr. Ambassador stated his readiness to provide an overall support in establishment of cooperation between ANTONOV and Canadian enterprises.

Antonov is getting some customers but I am surprised that Antonov is not aiming at South East Asian countries like Philippines and Vietnam,
