ANTONOV at the Paris Air Show 2015

At this year's Paris Air Show to be held within June 15−21, ANTONOV presents two advanced programs in the transport segment.

The first one is the AN−178 new multipurpose transport. Having performed its maiden flight on May 7, 2015 this freighter has already successfully performed a series of tests with total duration of about 40 hours.

The unique feature of the AN−178, which has a payload of 18 t, is its ability to carry all existing types of packaged freights (both containerized and palletized), including 2.44 x 2.44−m 1C high−capacity sea containers. This makes the aircraft an effective transport for logistics support and for operations in emergency situations. In keeping with the best characteristics of Antonov aircraft, the AN−178 can operate from any runway, including runways with artificial pavement, unpaved airfields, and alpine airdromes.

The aircraft operators from different countries expressed their interests in use of both civil and military versions of the AN−178. The market demand in such aircraft is estimated up to 1100 aircraft until 2035.

The second program−debutant is design of the AN−132 new−generation light multipurpose transport. It is intended for carrying various cargoes weighing over 9 t on short− and medium−haul routes. The AN−132 is an optimal decision for replacement of the AN−32 and AN−26 world−known aircraft, and other transports of such type, lifetime of which is coming to an end.

This project will be realized jointly with partners from Saudi Arabia with participation of leading aviation companies from different countries worldwide, including Pratt&Whitney Canada, General Electric, Honeywell, Liebherr, and Hamilton Sundstrand.

According to the preliminary estimations, about 900 airplanes of AN−132 type are demanded in the market.

At Le Bourget – 2015 representatives of ANTONOV Company will conduct a number of meetings and negotiations on development of these and other modern programs of ANTONOV to promote Ukrainian aviation production to the world market and to extend international cooperation.

Within Le Bourget – 2015 ANTONOV Company invites representatives of mass media to visit:

− the enterprise’s exposition at the stand H294 in hall 1;
− The AN−178 at static display;
− press−conference of Dmytro Kiva, General Designer, to be held on June 15, within 15:30−16:30 in Room 3 of the exposition’s conference−centre.

ANTONOV Company presented its new products at Le Bourget 2015 (Paris Air Show)

The official delegation of Ukraine headed by Oleg Gladkovskii, the First Deputy Secretary of National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Ruslan Korzh, Deputy minister of Economic Development and Trade, and Roman Romanov, General Director of Ukroboronprom, visited the ANTONOV’s exposition. The delegation also included representatives of Air Forces of Armed Forces of Ukraine, enterprises of defensive industrial complex and aviation industry of Ukraine.

“ANTONOV is one of the most important strategic enterprises for provision of security and economy of the country. At the same time it is a brand that is famous worldwide. Only few enterprises in the world can produce the aircraft of such class. Its entry into the Ukroboronprom will let maximally allocate manufacture of the ANTONOV aircraft in Ukraine in cooperation with partners from other countries. The President of Ukraine sets us a task to considerably increase a number of produced aircraft, to provide its purchase and to establish a powerful system of its operation support”, − said Roman Romanov, General Director of Ukroboronprom, at the meeting with journalists. Within the press−conference ways of reformation and further development of aviation industry of Ukraine were discussed.

Michael Gvozdev, new appointed acting President of ANTONOV Company, expressed confidence that the decision about division of functions of scientific−technical works and management at the enterprise will let perform that ambitious tasks the President sets to the enterprise: “I have already met the ANTONOV’s team and I’m sure that it can realize the set tasks. These are unique specialists and I will do everything possible for development of the enterprise brings prosperity to their families”.

Dmytro Kiva, General Designer of ANTONOV Company, made an accent on modern and perspective programs. He noted that within Le Bourget−2015 representatives of the enterprise conduct a very intensive process of negotiations, directed to expand the international cooperation and promotion of ANTONOV aircraft to the world market. Such projects include the following: creation of the AN−188 new transport on the base of the AN−70, further development of the AN−124−100 Ruslan, development of the AN−132 light transport. “We continue working in the segment of transport aircraft. Today at Le Bourget we present the new AN−178, and we are sure that it will take a respectable place at the world market”, − he said.

Paris Air Show 2015: Antonov reveals An-188 strategic transport aircraft

Antonov is developing a jet-engined version of the An-70 strategic transport aircraft, the An-188, company officials announced on 15 June at the Paris Air Show 2015.

Dmytro Kiva, Antonov's president and general designer, said that following the acceptance of the turboprop powered An-70 into Ukrainian service in January, "this aircraft has become the basis of the new An-188 with jets."

The company is positioning the An-188 in a similar niche to the An-70 or the Airbus A400M, with its maximum take-off weight of 140 tonnes and maximum payload of 40 tonnes, sitting in between that of the Lockheed Martin C-130 (79/20 tonnes) and the Boeing C-17 (255/75 tonnes).

Kiva said that the "aircraft [will be] able to operate from unpaved airfields [and] short airfields" of 915 m in length. As the aircraft used turbofan engines it "would provide "high economic efficiency and small fuel consumption", he added. Antonov specifications state the aircraft will have a fuel consumption of 4,600 kg per flight hour.

With the Ukrainian firm keen to move away from its previous relationship with Russia, and to try to increase the export potential of the aircraft, the An-188 is intended to be fitted with "western avionics and equipment, including engines".

Asked by IHS Jane's if and when the company would begin building a prototype An-188, or when it might even be ready to fly, Kiva said the company was now working and negotiating, but "we are not ready to say exactly when it will be ready to produce. But it's fair to say we have changed the An-70 considerably, because it's not only another engine, it will be another construction of the aircraft including in particular an enlarged wing."

The An-188 will be powered by four turbofan engines and although Kiva mentioned possibly using a western engine on the An-188, current plans are to use a Ukrainian engine from Motor Sich. Kiva said, "As far as the An-188 [is concerned], we are at the negotiation stage and in particular we are considering the possibility to equip it with Ukrainian engines made in Zaporizhia", that is, Motor Sich. He added that "there are two possible variants of engine, the D-436-FM, the new one, or I-28". It is unclear what engine he referred to as the I-28, but the D-436-FM is a new version of the Ivchenko-Progress D-436 turbofan that powers the An-158 civil airliner. According to Kiva this new version "will be ready next year".

Antonov officials also revealed that the company is working on a new variant of the An-178 twin-engine turbofan transport aircraft, which made its airshow debut at Le Bourget.

Although the An-178 only had its maiden flight on 7 May at Kyiv-Antonov Airport (Gostomel), having been first revealed in 2010, the type has since secured a launch customer (with Azerbaijan's Silk Airways having ordered 10 aircraft) and a new variant.

Called the An-178-111, the new version will feature western engines and western avionics and systems - rather than the Ukrainian standard systems on the An-178. Accordingly, instead of the current D-346 engine the An-178-111 will be offered with either General Electric CF34-10 or Pratt & Whitney PW1500 engines.

Antonov also revealed at the Paris Air Show that the An-178 should have completed civil type certification and seen the first aircraft delivered by the end of 2016. The An-178 is essentially an An-158 civilian transport/regional airliner fitted with a rear cargo bay door, for either the commercial freight or military markets.

Besides its general transport functions, Antonov said that the An-178 is planned to receive an air-to-air tanker (AAR) refuelling capability. For the AAR role, Antonov envisages the installation of a removable fuel tank within the cargo bay of the aircraft, providing a 15,000 kg fuel payload.

Antonov is pitching the An-178 as a replacement for the An-12 'Cub', the An-26 'Curl', and the An-32 'Cline' airlifters currently in service with various customers. With an 18-tonne payload, the An-178 sits amid various potential rivals on the export market, including the Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Hercules (22 tonnes); the Embraer KC-390 (23 tonnes); and the United Aircraft Corporation-Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Multirole Transport Aircraft (15-20 tonnes).

Ukraine will construct an aviation plant in Saudi Arabia

According to reached arrangements, the AN−132 light transport will be the first aircraft, construction of which is planning to be preformed at new aviation complex.

There are two updates on Antonov (besides An-132, An-178 and An-188):

1. Antonov is upgrading a number of Ukrainian Air Force's An-26. Scope of work includes installing missile countermeasure devices against man-portable air-defense systems.

2. Antonov is planning on producing UAVs and fighter jets for Ukrainian Air Force. Indeed, it's more realistic to see soon Antonov's UAVs then fighter jets. Later requires huge funds for R&D and production.
And a reminder, earlier on Antonov was transfered to Ukroboronprom, a Ukrainian state owned arms developing, producing and realization conglomerate.

Unfortunately, this news so far is only available in Ukrainian. As soon as it will be released in English I will update the link.
