Ukraine’s Antonov is the frontrunner for HAL’s military aircraft programme

Ukrainian state-run Antonov has emerged as the frontrunner for Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.’s (HAL) medium military transport aircraft programme.

HAL had received five proposals on its proposal to select a partner to manufacture a 50-80 seater aircraft in India. Out of the five bids, Antonov emerged as a clear winner as it met all the requirements set by HAL, sources told BusinessLine.

The Ukrainian firm, which had signed an agreement with Reliance Defence in April for joint production of their platforms in India, makes aircraft that can play both civil and military roles.

Apart from Antonov, GKN Aerospace, IAI, Ilyushin and ATR had also placed bids for the project. What worked in Antonov’s favour is that compared to all the other entrants, its series of aircraft are of recent design with state-of-the-art aviation systems like fly-by-wire, high-efficiency engines and all-weather operations.

According to estimates, the demand for 50-80 seater aircraft is expected to increase owing to the focus on tier II and III cities under the new Civil Aviation Policy. “HAL intends to leverage this opportunity through a partnering arrangement with an OEM under the Make in India programme,” officials said.

Antonov or AN class of aircraft have been part of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for over five decades. The IAF has more than 100 AN-32 aircraft recently upgraded on its inventory.

HAL is also looking at Antonov for additional military functions such as troop carrying and cargo, maritime patrol and reconnaissance, search and rescue operations.

The Head of State emphasized that over the past year, the enterprise had done a lot for self−development despite difficult conditions. As a result, average salary of the staff has been increased. “Even when Russia, as country−aggressor, closed its market for our products and terminated the supply of components, we didn’t give up! We remained unbroken. We entered new markets and learned to represent Ukraine in an absolutely different way,” the President noted.
The Head of State emphasized that except achievements in aircraft construction, Antonov staff has other accomplishments as well – about 300 workers of the plant participated in the ATO. “You delegated the best workers to rebuff the attack,” Petro Poroshenko noted.
“I am proud that we have a different army now. It is not a coincidence that I have declared 2016 the year of the Air Forces of Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.
The President also noted that he used aircrafts An−74 and An−148 produced by Antonov. “It is a good advertisement for security and technology of planes,” he said.
“Our common task is to transform Ukraine from an aviation state into an aviation player of global level. Taking into account the pace of Antonov planes’ promotion in the world, I have every reason to be sure that we will cope with this task,” the Head of State noted. He is confident that aircraft manufacturing can become a strategic sphere of the Ukrainian economy.

ILA 2016: An-178 debuts in Berlin as Antonov steps-up international export drive

The prototype aircraft will perform in the flying display at the biennial event taking place at the Berlin ExpoCenter Airport running from 1 to 4 June, some six months after the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) was named as the likely launch customer for the twin-turbofan airlifter.

Having only made its maiden flight in May 2015, the An-178 has already been showcased at the Paris and Dubai air shows, and is set to make its Farnborough debut later in 2016 also.

In December 2015, Antonov signed a 'memorandum on delivery' with Riyadh-based Taqnia Aeronautics for 30 An-178 airlifters for the RSAF, as well as the joint marketing of the platform to other potential Middle Eastern operators.

The An-178 is essentially an An-158 regional jet with a rear-loading ramp, while specifications listed in IHS Jane's All The World's Aircraft: Development & Production give the An-178 a cargo hold measuring 16.65 m including ramp, or 12.85 m excluding ramp; a 2.745 m width at the floor and a height of 2.75 m; and a floor area of 40 m² and a hold volume of 125 m³ (both including the ramp). Its wingspan is 28.84 m, it is 32.95 m in length and 10.14 m tall. The aircraft has a maximum payload of 18 tonnes and a range of 1,000 km fully loaded. Its cruise speed is 445 kt and requires a 2,500 m runway from which to operate.

Set to replace the An-12 'Cub', the An-26 'Curl', and the An-32 'Cline' airlifters in the Ukrainian Air Force, the 18-tonne-payload An-178 should also be a viable contender on the international fixed-wing medium-lift market.

Liebherr−Aerospace Toulouse SAS, Liebherr’s center of excellence for air management systems will design, supply and service the air management system, including the bleed air system, cabin pressure control and anti−ice system, for the first aircraft demonstrator AN−132D. The contract covers the delivery of the systems for four aircraft used for flight tests to Antonov Company’s facility in Kiev (Ukraine).

The AN−132D airplane will be the first prototype of the new AN−132 turboprop light transport aircraft to replace the regional aircraft AN−32 and AN−26. The AN−132 program is realized by Antonov Company in close cooperation with the companies King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and Taqnia Aeronautics Co., which are based in Riad (KSA).

Liebherr−Aerospace also supplies the cabin pressure control systems for the AN−74 and AN−140, and the integrated air management system for the AN−148, AN−158 and the AN−178 prototype. Francis Carla, Managing Director and CTO Air Management Systems, Liebherr−Aerospace & Transportation SAS, stated: “The new contract for the AN−132D is yet another proof of our successful partnership with Antonov Company.”
