Good progress anyway.
Going underground would have meant more money (requested from JBIC) and more time, both of which we don't have in the run up to the 2010 Commonwealth games. Delhi has 14 tunnel boring machines running on different lines right now , probably the most number of TBMs running simultaneously in the world.

That line infront of the lotus temple was recently in the news because residents living close by opposed it being elevated. The arguments they gave in court were probably the most dumbest I've ever come across. They lost the case but managed to get some concessions like noise barriers which should reduce the noise although not drastically. If they would have won the case, then the Del Metro work wouldn't have progressed in other parts since people would have demanded it to go underground in their area also. BTW the initial 6-7 kms of that line will be underground in Central Delhi.

Edit: Just to let you know, ~128kms are being added in under 5 years of which ~37kms will be underground.

There isn't any info available only on the future underground lines and stations. But as part of the rudimentary 2021 plan, the entire DM system will be >400kms.

Here's a map on it. I knew I had a larger version of it somewhere.

you know i hate?

i hate this f.ckin' Zagreb goverment that holds Metro project for 30 years... all they do just promise before elections, and after project goes under desk...

and when i see India is building metro line in 2-3 years (!!) it really gets me upset...

way to go Bangalore... i think you should invite our fat goverment to see and learn something from you... damn....

Bomb scare at Metro station in Delhi
24 May 2008
The Times of India

NEW DELHI: An anonymous phone call to police on Saturday afternoon threatening to blow up a metro station here triggered panic at the facility.

The Police Control Room received the threat call at around 12:45pm (local time) that bombs were placed in the Chawri Bazar metro station and it would be blown up, a senior police official said.

Bomb disposal teams and dog squads were rushed to the spot to conduct searches at the underground metro station.

"We are conducting searches and simultaneously trying to identify the caller," the official said.

The Delhi Police had on May 15 received a phone call from an unidentified caller threatening to blow up Sai Baba Temple in South Delhi, which later turned out to be hoax after intensive searches.

2 days ago, DMRC completed construction of a 1.5kms tunnel. some info -

Quote:
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today achieved its first breakthrough by making around 1500 meter long tunnel from Malviya Nagar to Hauz Khas. The tunnel was built in a record time four months after the initial drive of 60 meters was completed in 18 days in the month of January. The Phase-II tunnel was made by using the German LASER System to guide the Tunnel Boring Machine. 14 Tunnel Boring Machines were used simultaneously for the first time in any Indian city and perahps for the first time in Asia.
