I have made a lot of maps for Delhi metro using Google maps. In all of the maps, I tried to be as precise as I could but still could have made some errors. Some of the light colours esp. yellow is less visible. Plz bear with that as it was DMRC's choice

Posting them one by one, first starting with the basic map of Delhi for referencing.

1. Delhi map

In this map, one can clearly see the big grey area, which is Delhi and other small grey areas which are suburbs. The white region on the north and west of Delhi' grey area is also Delhi, urbanisation has not reached in those parts till now. So, western and northern suburbs are not shown completely (they are not very imp as well), while eastern as souther suburbs are completely visible.

This is followed by maps of metro construction phase by phase. Source: Delhi metro masterplan (http://www.delhimetrorail.com/commut...ro_map_big.jpg). This map has poor resolution and is cluttered, so I made these maps.

2. Phase-I of metro (Red) (65 km, 2005)

3. Phase-II (green) (125 km, 2010)

4. Phase-III (blue) (115 km, 2015)

5. Phase-1V (pink) (108 km, 2020)

These maps will make even more sense when looked in a slide show. I have made one, don't know how to upload. Slideshow was looking way better.

Maps which I posted above show phase wise construction. Now I am posting the maps which show how the lines will actually look like after completion of a particular phase(s). All line colours till Phase-II are actual while rest are random.

6. Delhi metro after Phase-II (190 km)

7. Delhi metro after Phase-IV (413 km)

I was feeling a shortage of colours by the time I reached Phase-IV. In all, after Phase-IV, there will be 14 lines.

CHENNAI | Subway

Chennai, India's second largest IT hub and a major manufacturing city is all set to get a metro system! The time taken for the project to go from concept to groundbreaking stage has been the fastest amongst all metro systems in India. The foundation stone was laid in June 2009.

Phase I which will see Chennai getting 2 lines totalling 45.1 kms is slated to be completed by 2014. The first section of line 1 between the Airport and Teynampet (14 kms) would be thrown open to commuters around late 2011. In Phase 1, The Chennai Metro Rail Corp is going to procure 42 train sets with a a 4 car configuration.

55% of Phase I will be underground with the rest being elevated. There will be 34 stations with 15 being elevated and the rest 19 underground. The Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount will serve as interchange stations for both corridors. The metro will be fully integrated with other forms of transportation - the Indian railways, the airport, bus terminal and the suburban mass transit system (MRTS).

Corridor 1: Washermenpet – Broadway (Prakasam Road) – Chennai Central Station – Rippon Building – along Cooum River – Government Estate – Tarapore Towers – Spencers – Gemini – Anna Salai – Saidapet – Guindy – Chennai Airport.

Corridor 2: Chennai Central – along EVR Periyar Salai – Vepery – Kilpauk Medical College – Aminjikarai – Shenoy Nagar – Annanagar East – Anna Nagar 2nd avenue – Tirumangalam – Koyambedu – CMBT – along Inner Ring Road – Vadapalani – Ashok Nagar – SIDCO – Alandur – St. Thomas Mount.

uh oh. impending flame war.

so what if the first section is small? you have to start somewhere.

the real problems arise when wealthier places willingly neglect PT infrastructure in favor of the car, or developer profits.
