Trail runs in Chennai metro line one is in progress

Chennai Metro Rail took a trip from Ashok Nagar to Alandur on Sunday, gearing up to commence operations in about six months from now. Hereafter, the trains will go through trials all the way from Koyambedu to Alandur — a distance of about 10 km — on which trains carrying people are likely to ply by October.

Around 10.30 a.m., the train departed from Ashok Nagar station and ran up to Alandur station, according to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

“Today, we conducted the trial run only in the up line. But soon, it will be carried out in the down line as well,” an official of CMRL said.

INDIA: The first class of 10 engineers from Delhi Metro Rail Corp was due to arrive in Kuala Lumpur last month as part of a tunnelling training programme to support construction of Phase 3 of the Delhi metro network.

Jointly operated by engineering groups MMC and Gamuda, the Kuala Lumpur academy opened in December 2011 and has hosted around 500 tunnelling engineers to date.

According to DMRC, the centre is one of few locations in the world able to fully simulate the underground conditions for tunnel boring.

DMRC expects to have up to 35 TBMs in use on the Phase 3 work to excavate 53 km of bored tunnel

An interim report of the project would be sent to the union urban development ministry soon, he said.

Proposal for Kalwa - Airoli Elevated Rail Link:-

The elevated rail corridor, connecting Kalwa near Thane City and Airoli in the city of Navi Mumbai, will cost Rs. 3.36 billion and should ease congestion at Thane City. The connectivity between Thane, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai needs to be improved considering the burgeoning population in the MMR, the official said.

Lucknow Metro Rail Project begins

Lucknow: the capital of Uttar Pradesh state (north-central India)

Metro Rail construction started yesterday (September 27)

Quote:
Lucknow: Work on the mass rapid transport system in city will formally kick off from today with the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav performing bhoomi-puja for Metro rail project on 32nd battalion of PAC campus on Kanpur Road.
The ceremony will mark a green signal to the civil construction work on the 'priority section' from Transport Nagar to Charbagh Railway Station and metro's depot on the PAC ground.

The construction work has been awarded to Larsen and Toubro, which qualified the tenders floated by DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) in July-end.

The LMRC board met on Friday to give formal approval to the company.

L&T is currently working on Hyderabad and Faridabad metro projects too.
L&T has already ordered for construction equipment and machinery landed on depot land on Friday.

French company Systra has been chosen as the design consultant for this 8-km stretch.
It would provide designs for structure like escalators, platforms, stations and staircases.

L&T has been asked to complete civil construction of priority section and metro's depot by December 2016.
This is excluding a special span above Mawaiya railway crossing for which separate tender would be floated.

The project has been frontrunner in various development projects launched by the CM. After securing several land and procedural clearances, the project got stuck at PIB's (Public Investment Board) approval front. Since PIB raised queries regarding design, cost and security arrangements of the project and sought clarifications from LMRC, the project could not get official nod from the Centre. This also delayed the possibility of getting financial assistance from Centre for the project in near future.

As CM has promised to deliver the project by Dec 2016, LMRC has no choice but to begin construction on priority section from the available funds.
It is noteworthy that PIB's approval has been sought for entire North Corridor from Amausi Airport to Munshipulia Chouraha (about 23 km).

Tuda plans monorail from Tirupati to Tirumala

Quote:
If the proposal takes concrete shape, then the day will not be far off when devotees can go up from Tirupati to Tirumala in a monorail. A feasibility report to this effect was sent by Tirupati Urban Development Authority (Tuda) to the Union urban development ministry last month. "If cleared by the Centre, a detailed project report will be prepared," Tuda planning officer K Krishna Reddy told TOI.

At a cost of nearly Rs 9,000 crore, the monorail has been proposed from the RTC bus station in Tirupati to Tirumala. The rail will come up along the ghat trek route and the 27 km distance can be covered in 25 to 30 minutes as against the one hour and 45 minutes it currently takes for the RTC bus and private vehicles respectively.

Stations have been proposed at RTC bus station, Alipiri and Kapilatheertham from where the devotees can enter the temple premises for darshan. "Monorail may not drastically reduce the travel time from Tirupati to Tirumala, but it will practically minimize the accidents on the ghat road," said sources.

The report was prepared by private consultant Urban Mass Transport Company ( UMTC) and the cost of preparing the same was funded by the Centre and Tuda in the ration of 80 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. "The monorail from Tirupati to Tirumala is a good proposal. I will follow it up with the Centre and ensure that it becomes a reality," Tirupati YSR Congress MP V Varaprasad told TOI.

Around 60,000 devotees visit Tirumala every day for darshan with the walking route taking about 5 hours for the devotee to reach his destination. The monorail can ferry about 300 passengers at a time. The proposal is part of the Tirupati Master Plan and is being clubbed with the smart city initiative proposed by the Narendra Modi government.

Decades ago, a proposal was put forth by Indian railway company, RITES, to construct a cable car link from Tirupati to Tirumala. However, it was shelved later. Tuda sources said they are expecting the Centre to act soon on the proposal sent by them to the Union urban development ministry which is headed by minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Centre push to Metro in Varanasi

Quote:
The plan to run Metro rail in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha seat, moved a little closer to getting a concrete shape with Union urban development ministry taking up for discussion a survey report of the possible routes prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The meeting called by the ministry officials to discuss the report in Delhi on Friday also saw attendance of Varanasi Mayor Ram Gopal Mohle, Municipal Commissioner Umakant Tripathi, Varanasi North MLA Ravindra Jaiswal and Varanasi Cantonment MLA Jyotsana Srivastava.

“The Ministry is exploring the possibilities of running Metro rail in Varanasi and DMRC has done a preliminary survey of the city so far in this regard,” Urban development ministry’s secretary Shankar Aggarwal, who held the meeting, told The Indian Express.

He said the Detailed Project Report of the Metro project would be prepared after a meeting with the all the stakeholders including the state government which would be asked to share the cost burden. Sources said DMRC has suggested for 17-km route from Sarnath to Banaras Hindu University (BHU) —- six-km underground and 11 km elevated —- as a possible stretch for running the Metro.

The DMRC is also exploring the possibility of running a major section of the Metro rail along River Ganga but that would require more technical studies. DMRC has estimated the project cost at Rs 3,500 crore, sources said. The Union Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) , however, has collected suggestions from local public representatives for other possible routes. Jyotsana Srivastava, BJP MLA from Varanasi Cantonment, said she has suggested for a route from Cantonment Railway station to BHU via Lahartara. The MoUD had a few weeks back sent to the UP government an action agenda for rejuvenation of Varanasi. It had also asked the state government to prepare a comprehensive city mobility plan to encourage public transport system in the temple city.

Varanasi’s surrounding areas including Sarnath, Babatpur, Mughal Sarai, Shivpur, Cholapur and Kashi are suggested to be developed as Satellite towns of Varanasi with proper transport connectivity to the temple city.

Delhi Tram:Trams to run in Chandni Chowk in 3 years

Quote:
The construction of trams under the Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan will be completed in three years, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) informed Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on Friday.

Jung and Union minister and Chandni Chowk MP Harsh Vardhan were jointly reviewing the progress of the work being undertaken in Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid precincts.

The DMRC managing director stated that the feasibility study shows that the ridership of the proposed tram will be 1 lakh people per day and 5,000 people per hour during peak hours in each direction of the line. The tram line is expected to be 4.55 km long and will run in a loop in the Chandni Chowk area. Six two-coach trams, with a capacity of 200, will run on the line. The frequency of the tram will be 2-3 minutes. The tram will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the entire length.

The Public Works Department (PWD), which is executing the redevelopment project, said the shifting and relocation of old water and sewer lines of Delhi Jal Board, BSES transformers, MTNL and police posts was on track.

So a one-way loop or two-way? And 4.55km is a substantial distance in that area, wonder what route they've proposed.

How many cities in India have substantial water transport systems?
Not counting Bombay, Calcutta, and Kerala.
