Looks a bit like Beekman Tower in New York (also from Gehry):

So this will be the highest residential highrise in germany?

Very nice design. I think the right one of the last three has won the competition. kleihues would have also been ok, but I dislike barkow-leibingers.

Sad that there is no visualisations of former round competitors (f.i. Kollhoff).

Anyway. It will be a great building for Berlin. Can't wait for it

Gehry tower seems more like a sculpture, and maybe it will give a new vibe to the place. But at the sime time I agree with Tolbert, because the kleihues+ kleihues project looks much more german, and would fit better.

Good to see some news, but it looks uninspired. Small, fat, stump, some random twists The Gehry buildings in New York and Düsseldorf are muuuch better.

The Barkow Leibinger and kleihues+ kleihues (I personally prefer the Barkow Leibinger) Designs are the better approaches in my opinion considering the proposed height and the surrounding of the building.

Missed opportunity IMO...

Kollhoff design for Hines Tower

An earlier competition entry by Hans Kollhoff, didn't make it to the finals:

Fairly adapted and classy mixture of the nearby Behrens modernism, Stalinist Marx-Allee designs and a tad of early skyscraper romanticism. Plus commercial mocking, ha. But also too fat, sadly. And a little boring, too.

Seems like the 150m height barrier (in respect of the Fernsehturm) and the desired requirements of Hines for a maximum return per footprint sqm prohibited a more elegant design here.

Usually, Kollhoff would design something like this:

But the building will no doubt have the highest apartments in Germany.

Chipperfield showes exactly what i meant when i said that the tower would be great in brick cladding. Nice coresponding to the tower of cityhall and the churches. Normaly i dont realy like his designs to much, but its interesting to see how the british guy made the most "german looking" design at all This together with Kolhoff, Kleihues or even Barko on place of the Alexa spot would made up for a really great cluster in cubature and material. Baumschläger is very interesting, but it would be great as an adition on the midrise cluster on Spittelmarkt. Ingehoven is good to, not on the proposed spot but mybe on Mediaspree. So far with my "two cityplaning cents" ;D

In Hanover, I´ve seen some early modern precedents of what I Interpret to be your idea of "german looking" highrises:

You can also see the line back to older, historical buildings in the City:

I think that the depicted brick styles are northern german (almost hanseatic) rather than pan-german.
