A Quantum Retrospective (Miami at Night)!

I started shooting at night during the 2010 holiday season. Even though I started shooting in the Summer of 2008, I didn't start shooting at night until over two years later because the idea just didn't appeal to me at first. Finally, I ran out of skyline during the day and decided to try something different. I never thought I'd love it as much as I do! It's a different, sometimes more colorful palette to paint with. Anyway, I thought I'd do this retrospective thread of my best and favorite night shots until I get more skyline to shoot. There will be a separate one for aerials and a separate one for street-level shots. Decided to break this up.

Christmas morning 2010!

Nice Quantum! Miami is our closest thing to Dubai

Thanks, Musiccity! There is more under construction now with more projects scheduled to start later this year and next year. Unlike Dubai, we have 1,010 feet height limit for downtown Miami

This was my first and only attempt thus far at a night aerial. Miami Seaplane doesn't usually fly tours at night, but the owner did this sunset flight especially for me. Very difficult shoot in a fast-moving Cessna.

The Miami Tower at Night

I have cut several photos from previous posts to highlight and discuss certain illuminated skyscrapers here in Miami.

The Miami Tower was completed in 1987 and designed by I.M. Pei. It was then known as the Centrust Bldg. When that company failed with its shady CEO, it became known as the International Bldg. Later, it became NationsBank. For many years afterwards, it was Bank of America's regional headquarters. Then, with the downturn in the economy, Bank of America had to downsize and consolidate into its smaller Brickell Avenue tower. The owners of the building then named it the Miami Tower.

Last year, it had a new, state-of-the-art, computerized LED lighting system installed. It can now change colors instantaneously in an almost infinite number of color patterns. Here on SSC, it was recently voted one of the top five best illuminated skyscrapers in the world.

The Marquis

The Marquis is truly iconic with its light ladder seen for miles.

At 700 feet tall, the marquis is the tallest building to come out of the condo boom of the last decade. Some might say it's the Four Seasons at 789 feet, but since that building was planned in the 90s, I don't agree. My theory as to when the condo boom of the last decade began and what sparked it is somewhat controversial. I created a thread in the Miami forum to discuss and OMG! So we won't discuss it here. Taller buildings are on the way for Miami in this decade.

I didn't care much for the Marquis after the building itself was completed, but then they installed the light ladder. For me, the building blooms at night and truly comes into its own then.

Freedom Tower

Freedom Tower is considered Miami's Ellis Island becuase of what went on there 50 years ago. We also light it in different colors for different occasions.

Espirito Santo

As with the Miami Tower, everybody seems to like the architecture and lighting of Espirito Santo. In the last photo, you can see the lighted atrium of the Conrad Hotel on the left, just to the right of the Four Seasons.

Club 50 is a pool side bar and restaurant lounge on the 50th floor of the Viceroy Hotel and Spa in the Icon Brickell condominium complex. During the week, it is only open to hotel guests, but locals can go up on the weekends, which is how I got these shots. When One Bayfront Plaza opens 2018, it will have an observation deck whereby I can get more photos like these.

good attempts....few are great and some still lack clarity. did you mounted your cam on a tripod?
seriously, the city really looks very nice at night with all those lights.
