It is like a building formed by a group of blocks... Hmmm, this building remains me the Willis Tower. It is like its son
Good design!

Not bad, but the older design was more eye-catching. But it's nice that it sort of resembles the Sears Tower.

The new proposal looks better, previous looks like an axe. I cant wait for Wolf Point South hoping to break ground in 2016.

If that is really the final design for this residential tower, then how come, in the eventual to-towers plan, the two towers have the exact same design?

This may be a possible explanation: Over a decade ago, I think there were two ~250-meter residential towers with very different designs (One of the towers is the one that looked like an ax, according to one user). Then in 2013 came one huge slab-like residential tower (named "The Chicago"); nice job fitting out a site big enough for two residential towers. It's the curse of another site in which we can't get a single proposal off the ground.

What in the world are you talking about? Um...twin towers usually do have the same design?

Also, I'm not sure about before but there's only been one proposal for that site in the past decade and that was the tower that looked like an axe. An actual design or proposal was never revealed for a second tower on the site next to the "axe". Then in 2013, someone saw the design for the Chicago on the architect's website and posted a few pictures and everyone got all excited and a thread was created. However, an announcement was never made about the Chicago being a real proposal. Was there even a developer? As a matter of fact, I believed someone on one of the many Chicago blogs had reached out to the architect to inquire about the building and was told the Chicago was just a design excise or something and not an actual or active proposal.

I could assume that the One Museum Park towers (the west of which is named "The Grant") have a very similar design, also. And that proposal from a decade ago for the 113 East Roosevelt site was named Grant Park Tower III and Grand Park Tower IV, according to Emporis; the heights of those now-cancelled towers are 241 m and 293 m, respectively.

The heights were basically estimates of what the zoning would allow. If you google Grant Park tower 4 you'll see that there is not a rendering to be found anywhere. That's because one never existed. All there ever was is a place holder translucent box.

City Approves New Tallest Tower for Chicago’s South Loop

Quote:
Today the Chicago Plan Commission approved the construction of a 76-story, 829-foot-tall residential skyscraper marking the southwest corner of Grant Park at 113 East Roosevelt Road.

The very slender Rafael Viñoly-designed tower is one of a pair planned for the site. It was deliberately designed as bundled square tubes to pay homage to the Willis Tower a dozen or so blocks to the northwest. Inside the approved building will be 796 residences, 622 parking spaces, and 12,500 square feet of retail space. The second would be slightly smaller, with an estimated 648 residences.

The developer, Crescent Heights has pledged to donate $300,000 to support three nearby parks: Webster Park, the Chicago Women’s Park, and Armstrong Park. Friends of the Parks Director of Policy Melanie Moore told the commissioners that while she appreciates the money, she thinks the skyscraper will negatively impact Grant Park...

The 810' figure is to the underside of the slab of the most habitable floor. As you can see from the images, there's a bit more structure above 810'. In the 3rd image down, everything above the yellow is in addition to 810'.

The height on the document states... 887' 2"

Night of the NIMBYs

Viñoly's 76-Story Tower to Start in June as Neighbors Push Back

Quote:
Rafael Viñoly’s upcoming 76-story, 792-unit residential tower at 113 E Roosevelt is set to break ground in June after following the City of Chicago’s zoning and design review protocols to the letter. Despite acknowledging the fact that developer Crescent Heights executed their project according to the rules, a group calling itself South Loop Residents for Responsible Development claims that the voices of many local residents opposing the project were not heard during the process. An online petition recently launched by the group cites a number of grievances against the planned multi-phase project.

Most of the teeth-gnashing revolves around the tower’s base that will house a 640-space parking garage and small liner apartments facing the park. According to the online document, neighbors believe that the building’s 17-story base is too tall and is much higher than the base presented in a previous, pre-recession proposal for the corner of Roosevelt and Indiana.

[...]

Even if opposition to the project suddenly gains critical mass, the first tower was approved late last year and is still expected to begin construction this summer. At this point there’s really not much the neighbors can do besides grasp at some legal straws and find a reason to sue. Future phases (including the taller twin tower planned to the west) still will need to go both the community approval process and the city’s Plan Commission before moving forward and would be a great opportunity for any concerned neighbors to speak up.
