Chermside Stage 5 Redevelopment

I dont know if anyone knows this but Westfield Chermside have a proposed Stage 5 development which (unofficial word) is due to commence in February.

A couple of months ago the plans and renders were displayed publicly in the main mall for a couple of weeks but since then nothin has been heard about it. The other day when i was searching through Project Centre (a construction document management site) i noticed that Westfield Chermside was on the list of sites.

I have a picture but i dont know how to put them on yet. maybe its just this computer.

Check it out at www.projectcentre.net then go into list of main projects. it will be in there somewhere.

Reading through the DA, it states that the Stage 5 extension will add approx 37,000 sq/m of GLA or approx 50,000 sq/m of GFA. Bringing the total size of the centre to 113,000 sq/m GLA or 156,000 sq/m GFA. Would this make it the biggest shopping centre in QLD?

Indooroopilly is 80,933 sqm GLA

(What is GLA/GFA?)

It would appear chermside will be larger.

A General Oveview only including Westfield and Gandel centres. I skipped a few after getting below 100,000 so keep in mind there are plenty of other centres that SHOULD be in this group.

Westfield Fountain Gate Melbourne has 142,761 SQM GLA
Westfield Marion Adelaide has 134,000 SQM GLA
Westfield Southland melbourne has 131,621 SQM GLA
Chadstone Melbourne has 126,980 SQM GLA
Westfield Carindale Brisbane has 113,007 SQM GLA
Westfield Miranda Sydney has 109,146 SQM GLA
Bondi Junction Sydney has 104,875 SQM GLA
Westfield Carousel Perth has 81,666 SQM GLA
Northland Melbourne has 71,411 SQM GLA
Myer Centre Brisbane has 63,902 SQM GLA
Elizabeth City Centre Adelaide has 57,941 SQM GLA
Broadmeadows Melbourne Has 51,530 SQM GLA
Mount Pleasant Mackay has 51,404 SQM GLA
Chatswood Chase has 49,268 SQM GLA
Myer Centre Adelaide has 49,541 SQM GLA
Rockingham City Perth has 46,143 SQM GLA
Grand Plaza Brisbane has 41,438 SQM GLA

So Chermside would slot in just after Carindale by a mere 7 metres by your calculations.

Well, my figure was rounded down, the actual figure was a little higher. So it would be the biggest.

So will Banfield road be wiped out, or will it be built over completely?

Gross Lettable Area = GLA

I thought Carindale or Pacific Fair are Queenslands largest.

Yeah, Carindale is currently the largest, but this expansion will make Chermside bigger.

Banfield road will still be there, it will just be covered over around the current entrance of the centre from that side.

More mindless shopping centre expansion.

Now let's sit back and watch Garden City react to Chermside's expansion by building another 3 Subway franchises and another 40 f**king overpriced juice bars.

Garden City is now owned by Westfield and has just completed another expansion.

The problem with Australia is the love of the franchise. If we did not have as many perhaps we would have more competition and less of a mall 'cut and paste' culture.

Personally I'd like to see Carindale, Brookside expand and a complete redevelopment of Indooroopilly.

Brookside would be good. before Morgan & wacker leased that rear carpark, it was going to be developed into a theatre/entertainment section. But Stafford and Chermside beat them to it. There's still a fiar bit of room for expansion outwards, but alot of road restructure would have to be done. But an expansion would serve well as Brookside is a major for shoppers in the North-West area.

Yes, ive long thought brookside needs expansion. A Cinema complex definitly. They should make the rest of the complex multi level the same as myer is (anyone who doesnt know myer has a store in there which is 3-4 levels, i cant remeber)

I know Garden City was recently expanded. They have even filled in most of the open space between the levles to fit in another 50 friggin overpriced juice bars. Problem is it's become too large. It's now near impossible to find a parking space anywhere and the Garden City Busway Station isn't integrated into the centre well enough. What is the point of these megamalls?

Malls change to suit want the community call for. Growing I remember going to the Hoyts Twin Cinemas at Greensborough Shopping Centre in Melbourne. Times change and then there was the food court fad, now the entertainment meeting precints.

The other thing about Garden City is noticing the number of kiosks has ballooned since change of ownership/management. It is now very cluttered and is a shame. Bring back the peacock.
