It looks quite out of place next to those townhouses. If it was a few blocks to the west.

I think you mean a few blocks north, but this area is changing rapidly. It is on Howard St. and Mission St., one block north, has become an office tower canyon. There are already such towers on Second St. at Mission.

There is another parking lot across Second at Howard which I assume will one day soon be developed as an office tower also. And in one block in either direction on Howard the final building of the Foundry Square office complex (about 12 floors so as not to shade the TransBay rooftop park) and the new wing of the Museum of Modern Art (not a tower but pretty tall) are going up.

Highrise Check-In: Updates on 222 Second St.

Quote:
Currently: The site is not much to see currently as shoring and ground improvements are underway to prepare for excavation. With 2 floors of underground parking, don't expect to see this one rise above the ground for months to come, but as long as market conditions stay stable we do expect this tower to move along, as only a couple other speculative towers are currently under construction.

I don't have any pics, but this is now under construction. They're working on the foundation and have poured concrete and installed some rebar. A crane should be go up any day now.

High-Rise Check-In: 222 Second Street

Quote:
Currently: The last time we checked in with 222 Second Street the dirt was just starting to get pushed around. Fast forward about five months and the site is completely excavated, tons of rebar has been installed and the site is nearly ready for a massive foundation pour. The base of a tower crane has been installed and this building should start going vertical soon enough. Basement build-out will likely take at least a couple more months, but the structure should begin to rise above ground soon after that.

Expect some of the "townhouses" (actually, older commercial buildings) to be replaced by high rises also in the coming years.

This is a showcase corner and focal point of the much of the SOM area of San Francisco. The uninteresting and unmoving design is most disappointing.

Looks fine to me, as far as simple glass boxes go. But in any case it's better than the empty lot that was there before.

I really expect that yes. Considering the development in this area.

seems like an unusually big amount of steel in the future concrete.

Can't wait to see this rise! I like the clean design - less is more.

Sometimes, less is just less.

I appreciate the belief that ornamentation and some relief is "extra", but for San Francisco, vanilla tastes in architecture (and sex) is so not San Francisco. Let's get some sizzle going instead of walls of plain glass!
