Official rendering of the WTC complex, the perf arts center was just stuck in there by some dude at home from an early low res massing sketch.

We should find out about the design this coming Thursday.

Additionally, the design announcement for the long-awaited performing arts center, now known as the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, is to come on Thursday. The Performing Arts Center has been a missing piece from the 16-acre puzzle and, with funding from its benefactor on track, it appears time for it to slip into its northern spot at Vesey Street between 1 WTC and the future 2 WTC — and opposite Silverstein’s privately owned No. 7 and petite park.

I personally like that box. It looks much better than Ghery's original design and I actually find the design quite creative.
Great addition to an already striking complex.

Another render

More from the Post article.

Quote:
Additional funds are still needed to complete the center, which is slated to open in 2020. Perelman’s donation revived plans for the project, which also received a $99 million grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.
...
The box itself will have a simple exterior of thinly veined white marble from the same quarry used for the Jefferson Memorial and US Supreme Court, Prince-Ramus said during an exclusive preview of the space with The Post.

The marble is translucent and sandwiched between glass pieces. During the day, it will glow a welcoming amber on the insides. In the evenings, the outside will also project moving shadows as patrons and artists pass through the corridors.

The box is the most perfect architectural shape
You can't get away with it.
Rex's design sounds like it's a fallen part of the striking Big's tower:kinetic architecture!
Great interaction with Child's tower base also..

His design was awesome while too expensive.

What a waste of marble. This is pure 60s redux. Gordon Bunshaft could have designed this thing.

If they were doing historical architecture they might as well have built something beautiful like an art deco theater.

I liked Gehry's design on its own, but it never felt like the right fit for the site to me -- I'd prefer to see it built in LA. This REX box has a nice relationship with the rest of the site, in particular the base of 1WTC, the memorial pools, and the Museum. I wonder if it will actually glow at all like that video suggests, or if that's just artistic license?

You can spell his name anyway you want, his design for the site was a dud!
And I'm a fan of "Gehry" and very much agree he's one of our greatest architects. That said I'm glad his design bit the dust.

Well, I guess I should do some reading before I post dumb questions, but that's what I get for checking the forum at the office. I'm not normally a huge fan of marble facades, but this treatment sounds like it could be pretty special.
