I'm a huge fan of the underground but damn the Russians really know how to build a subway. Puts us to shame.

Americans care about their past, but for short term gain they ignore it and tear down everything that matters... This is the time to take a stand, to reverse the tide, so that we won't all end up in a uniform world of steel and glass boxes.

I don't understand the heavy dark grotto subway stations shown from Stockholm.. especially in a northern climate that can use all the brightness and light it can get. I find them claustrophobic and downright depressing and more something you would see in an amusement park with rollercoasters. I suppose I could say trying a bit too hard to be "iconic". Equally I don't like the heavy historical Baroque decorative old school Moscow ones either; that style is pretentious and suits either 18th century ballrooms or Liberace's house better than a modern transportation system. Give me clean and simple with quality materials any day of the week; like this:

If those stations are build in the US, I'm sure they will be covered in graffiti in a month's time.

Man those photos make me jealous, most of the stations in Toronto are nasty and run down.

One of the few worth mentioning is the Dupont Station, opened 1978. But even this one is old and neglected.

Some great examples in this thread .

"Beautiful" to somebody not always means attractive to everyone. I really liked this one in Moscow - Pyatnitskoye Shosse:

source

Quite simple, yet classy and - the most important - it is curved!

Ticket windows are not that bad, too:

previous form here

Main entrance hall is quite typical for newest stations:

P.S. Note how great that black/white colors refects people dressing style in that place : )
