Lost Indianapolis

Indianapolis prior to the second world war was filled with fantastic examples of Western architecture. A city that boomed from the mid-late 19th century and went through several architectural blooms because of this.

However, after WWII and clear up until the 1980's, Indianapolis suffered the same destruction that most American cities did- "Urban renewal". Entire districts were demolished for the sake of new urbanism. Modernist high-rises, complexes, and spaces replaced the highly ornate spaces of old.

Although a portion of the city's historic architecture survives, it is nothing like it once was.

To start our journey into lost Indianapolis architecture.

English Opera House (Oscar Wilde appeared here in 1882)

Destroyed in the 1950's and replaced with this.

The old courthouse

This statuary was destroyed with the building

Demolished in the early 1960's for the front yard of the City County Building

The only survivors being a handful of the architectural statues scattered about the city.

Wow, those are some beautiful buildings! Your courthouse reminds me of our old courthouse here in Columbus. Such a shame they are gone forever!

Ah the old Franklin county courthouse...

What a shame. The mindless destruction of our historic architecture will forever scar our cities.

The post WW2 decades 50,s to 80,s were some of the most destructive ever when it comes to the loss of really important and fine buildings and this city seems to have suffered more than some others. It was not only in the U.S. of course, but a world wide malaise which affected South America even more than North and in Europe many fine structures damaged by war but easily restored were also lost through the dogma of modernism. Thankfully most of that madness has gone but not completly of course.

Prior to WWII and the age of "urban renewal" that followed, most major American cities looked similar in many ways to their European cousins across the pond. Though, a chunk of old school American architecture still survives.

Modernists seem to have some sort of vendetta against Western architecture.
